System Requirements

2.1 Processor Requirements

You will need Sun UltraSPARC workstation or server as your processor. Either:

Ultra 1 170MHz or faster minimum is recommended for client workstations and for servers in small networks up to 100 Cisco 6100s
A multiprocessor system (Ultra 2, Ultra 60, or Ultra Enterprise 3000/4000) is recommended for the server in networks with 100 or more Cisco 6100s

2.2 Memory Requirements

The following are the memory requirements:

256MB RAM is recommended for 100 Cisco 6100s and 4 hosted clients
Cisco recommends that client workstations be configured with at least 256MB RAM and that server workstations be configured with at least 512MB RAM per CPU in order to manage networks with more than 100 Cisco 6100s.

2.3 Disk Space Requirements

A minimum installation requires 2.1 GB available disk space minimum, utilized as follows:

HP OpenView requires approximately 200MB of disk space, including up to 150MB in the /opt file system and up to 50MB in the /var directory.
ViewRunner for HP OpenView requires approximately 70MB each for the server and client applications. The file systems in which to install these packages can be selected during the installation process. Typical installation destinations include /opt or /export file systems. Log files can consume large amounts of space at higher trace levels.
The Oracle Server or Oracle Workgroup Server require approximately 500MB of disk space. The majority of this disk space is typically taken from either the /opt or /export file system, or from a dedicated file system separate from those used by ViewRunner and HP OpenView.
A 4.3GB internal drive is required.
An external disk array with at least six drives and a separate controller is recommended for large networks. This allows Oracle datafiles to be spread across multiple disks, reducing the I/O boundedness of the Oracle database. Backup and restore requirements may dictate more disks.
The ViewRunner database requires 400MB to 4GB of disk space, depending on network size and alarm history storage requirements, and should be distributed across multiple drives for performance and reliability reasons.

2.4 Swap Space Requirements

Swap space equal to at least twice the real memory in the machine is recommended.

2.5 Shared Memory and Semaphores

HP OpenView and the Oracle Server both require the shared memory and semaphore facilities to be installed. The following lines should be added to the /etc/system file, and the workstation should be rebooted. Please consult your Oracle manual for more information.

The system must be rebooted after these changes have been made.

Note For databases with larger system global areas, the shmmax value may need to be increased.

2.6 Monitor Requirements

You should have a monitor with the following characteristics:

Graphics frame buffer, x-terminal or PC-based X-server required
1024 x 768 with 64 colors minimum
1280 x 1024 with 256 colors is recommended

2.7 External Media

You will need a CD-ROM drive to install the various systems necessary to run ViewRunner for HP OpenView.

2.8 Network Connectivity (Network Connection)

Any Ethernet connectivity available on the Sun SPARCstation is supported, including 10BaseT, 100BaseTX, or AUI. ViewRunner can communicate with the Cisco 6100 through an IP overlay network to the Cisco 6100's Ethernet port or through an ATM network to the Cisco 6100's inband management channel.

If any Cisco 6100s need to be managed across both Ethernet and inband management channel, two network interfaces on separate subnets will be needed on the ViewRunner server.

2.9 Additional Requirements

Cisco also recommends that you have the following:

Mirroring (which requires additional drives)
Enterprise Volume Manager
VERITAS file system

2.10 Y2K Compliance Information

To have a Y2K compliant environment for this release of ViewRunner for HP OpenView, you need the following patches for the third part software.

HP OpenView NNM with the latest consolidated patch is Y2K compliant. ViewRunner automatically checks during installation for HP OpenView patches that are Y2K compliant. See the following Web site for more information.

Solaris 7 is Y2K compliant, and Solaris 2.6 and 2.5.1 can be with some patches. See the following Web sites for more information. The SunSolve Online site below provides detailed information on the patches necessary for bringing Solaris 2.6 and 2.5.1 into compliance.

Oracle 7.3 is Y2K compliant. However, there are some parameters that can violate that compliance. ViewRunner does not use any of the date functions in Oracle so it does not make use of any parameters which could violate Y2K compliance.
