System Requirements
You need one of the following recommended Sun UltraSPARC workstations or servers as your processor:
- Ultra 1 170 MHz (minimum) or faster for client workstations and for servers in small networks of up to 100 Cisco 6100 Series systems
- A multiprocessor system (Ultra 2, Ultra 60, or Ultra Enterprise 3000/4000) for the server in networks with 100 or more Cisco 6100 Series systems
Following are the memory requirements:
- 256 MB RAM is recommended for up to 100 Cisco 6100 Series systems and 4 hosted clients
- Cisco recommends that client workstations be configured with at least 256 MB RAM and that server workstations be configured with at least 512 MB RAM per CPU in order to manage networks with more than 100 Cisco 6100 Series systems
The minimum available disk space required is 2.1 GB, distributed as follows:
- HP OpenView requires approximately 200 MB of disk space, including up to 150 MB in the /opt file system and up to 50 MB in the /var directory.
- ViewRunner for HP OpenView requires approximately 70 MB each for the server and client applications. The file systems into which you install these packages can be selected during the installation process. Typical installation destinations include the /opt or /export file systems. Log files can consume large amounts of space at higher trace levels.
- The Oracle Server or Oracle Workgroup Server requires approximately 500 MB of disk space. The majority of this disk space is typically taken from either the /opt or /export file system, or from a dedicated file system separate from those used by ViewRunner and HP OpenView.
- A 4.3 GB internal drive is required.
- An external disk array with at least six drives and a separate controller is recommended for large networks. An external disk array allows Oracle data files to be spread across multiple disks, reducing the risk of Oracle becoming input/output (I/O) bound. The backup and restore requirements may dictate more disks.
- The ViewRunner database requires 400 MB to 4 GB of disk space, depending on the network size and alarm history storage requirements, and should be distributed across multiple drives for performance and reliability reasons.
Swap space equal to at least twice the real memory in the machine is recommended.
HP OpenView and the Oracle Server both require that the shared memory and semaphore facilities are installed. The following lines should be added to the /etc/system file, and the workstation should be rebooted. Please consult your Oracle manual for more information.
forceload: sys/shmsys
forceload: sys/semsys
set pt_cnt=256
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=209715200
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=50
set semsys:seminfo_semaem=16384
set semsys:seminfo_semmap=66
set semsys:seminfo_semmnu=30
set semsys:seminfo_semume=10
set semsys:seminfo_semvmx=32767
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=30
set semsys:seminfo_semmns=1750
set semsys:seminfo_semmni=70
The system must be rebooted after these changes have been made.
Note For databases with larger system global areas, the shmmax value may need to be increased.
You should have a monitor with the following characteristics:
- Graphics frame buffer, X terminal, or PC-based X-server required
- 1024 x 768 with 64 colors minimum
- 1280 x 1024 with 256 colors is recommended
You need a CD-ROM drive to install the various systems necessary to run ViewRunner for HP OpenView.
Any Ethernet connectivity available on the Sun SPARCstation is supported, including 10BaseT, 100BaseTX, or AUI. ViewRunner can communicate with the Cisco 6100 Series system through an IP overlay network to the Cisco 6100 Series system modem Ethernet port or through an ATM network to the Cisco 6100 Series system inband management channel.
If any Cisco 6100 Series systems need to be managed across both an Ethernet and inband management channel, two network interfaces on separate subnets are needed on the ViewRunner server.
Cisco also recommends that you have the following:
- Mirroring (which requires additional drives)
- Enterprise Volume Manager
- VERITAS file system
To have a Y2K compliant environment for this release of ViewRunner for HP OpenView, you need the following patches for the third party software.
HP OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM) with the latest consolidated patch is Y2K compliant. During installation, ViewRunner automatically checks for HP OpenView patches that are Y2K compliant. See the following Web site for more information:
http://ovweb.external.hp.com/cpe/patches/nnm/notices.htm
Solaris 7 is Y2K compliant, and Solaris 2.6 and 2.5.1 can be made compliant with some patches. See the following Web sites for more information. The SunSolve Online Web site provides detailed information on the patches necessary to bring Solaris 2.6 and 2.5.1 into compliance.
http://www.sun.com/y2000/cpl.html
Oracle 7.3 is Y2K compliant. However, some parameters can violate the compliance. ViewRunner does not use any of the date functions in Oracle so it does not make use of any parameters that could violate Y2K compliance.
