Unpacking the Cisco 6130 DSLAM with NI-2

This chapter provides instructions for unpacking and inspecting your Cisco 6130 NI-2 digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM). This chapter also describes the safety guidelines for a Cisco 6130 NI-2 DSLAM installation.

Note Before you install a Cisco 6130 NI-2 DSLAM, you might find it helpful to read the Cisco 6130 DSLAM with NI-2 User Guide, which contains functional and physical descriptions of Cisco 6130 NI-2
hardware components.
Caution Before you start the installation procedures, read the remainder of this chapter for important information and safety warnings.

1.1 Unpacking the System

Each Cisco 6130 NI-2 DSLAM chassis is securely packaged in a shipping box. The Cisco 6130 NI-2 DSLAM components ship in either of two ways:

The module antistatic carriers ship together in a box. The network interface (NI) module is packed in its own antistatic bag, which is housed in foam inserts and shipped in a separate box.

The system I/O card is packed in the system I/O card installation kit, together with components required to complete its installation

Caution Proper ESD protection is required whenever you handle Cisco DSLAM equipment. Installation and maintenance personnel should be properly grounded using ground straps to eliminate the risk of ESD damage to the equipment. Modules are subject to ESD damage whenever they are removed from the chassis.

To unpack the Cisco 6130 NI-2 DSLAM, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Inspect the packing containers. If any damage or other signs of mishandling are evident, inform both the local freight carrier and Cisco before unpacking. Your freight carrier can provide you with the procedures necessary to file a claim for damages.

Step 2 Carefully open the box containing the chassis.

Step 3 Remove all packing material.

Step 4 Remove the chassis.

Warning Two people are required to lift the chassis. Grasp the chassis underneath the lower edge and lift with both hands. To prevent injury, keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back.

Step 5 Carefully open the additional boxes, remove the packing material, and remove the modules.

Step 6 Open the accessory and installation kits that contain the installation hardware, cables, and documentation. Do not use a knife to open these boxes.

Step 7 Verify your shipment. To verify that you have received all equipment, cables, and documentation, compare the packing list with your shipment and your order. If any items are missing or you need additional information, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at one of the following:

1.2 Inspecting for Damage

After you verify that you have received all of the equipment, carefully examine the assemblies, modules, kits, and cables for any damage resulting from shipping. If you suspect that damage has occurred, contact your local freight carrier for procedures on damage claims.

If you observe any physical defects in the items you ordered, obtain standard warranty service by delivering the defective part, accompanied by a copy of the dated proof-of-purchase, to the Cisco Systems Corporate Service Center or an authorized Cisco Systems Service Center during the applicable warranty period. Contact the Cisco TAC for the location of your nearest service center.

See the back of the title page for the Cisco Systems warranty policy for hardware and software products.

1.3 Safety Guidelines

Before working on the equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with the electrical circuitry, and observe standard safety practices to prevent accidents. Adhere to the following warning and other warnings and cautions located throughout this guide for safe and hazard-free installation. Read the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information for the Cisco 6100 Series System document before you begin installation of the equipment described in this installation guide.

Warning The safety covers are an integral part of the product. Do not operate the unit without the safety covers installed. Operating the unit without the covers in place will invalidate the safety approvals and pose a risk of fire and electrical hazards
