This chapter provides an overview of the Cisco 6100 Series with NI-1 system. This chapter contains the following sections:

Introduction to the Cisco 6100 Series with NI-1 System

The Cisco 6100 Series with NI-1 system is part of the Cisco DSL product family that provides end-to-end service by carrying data between a subscriber's home or office, a telephone central office (CO), and various networks. The Cisco 6100 Series with NI-1 system sends and receives subscriber data (often Internet service) over existing copper telephone lines, concentrating all traffic onto a single high-speed trunk for transport to the Internet or a corporate intranet. Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) and symmetrical digital subscriber line (SDSL) customer premises equipment (CPE) devices, which are connected to PCs or routers at the subscriber site, modulate data so that the data can travel over telephone lines to the Cisco 6100 Series digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) at the CO.

The Cisco 6100 Series with NI-1 system includes the following components:

Cisco 6100 or Cisco 6130 chassis---A carrier class DSLAM.

Cisco 6110 chassis.

Cisco 6120 chassis---A passive plain old telephone service (POTS) splitter.

ADSL POTS splitters, or voice filters (located both at the subscriber premises and at the CO)---Supports simultaneous voice and data transmission. If a subscriber is using a telephone line for data only, the POTS splitter connection is not required.
ViewRunner management software---Provisions and manages the Cisco 6100 Series with NI-1 system. ViewRunner is available in two platforms:
- ViewRunner for Windows.
- ViewRunner for HP OpenView.

Features

The features of the Cisco 6100 Series with NI-1 system include the following items:

Supports both ADSL and SDSL

Carrierless amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) rate adaptive DSL (RADSL), ANSI T1.413 Issue 2 Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT-2), and G.lite modem support
Small footprint that terminates up to
- 64 ADSL to 128 ADSL/SDSL subscriber lines (using a Direct Connect configuration)
- 400 DSL subscriber lines (using a DOH configuration)
NEBS compliant, 23-inch chassis
SNMP-manageable through ViewRunner for Windows or ViewRunner for HP OpenView
Subtend as many as seven Cisco 6100/6130 chassis which supports up to 2800 subscribers per OC-3c WAN connection
Supports up to 3000 virtual channel identifier (VCI)/virtual path identifier (VPI) connections
ATM Forum UNI Version 3.1 compliant
Nonblocking ATM switching architecture
Allows up to three ATM classes of service simultaneously
