Cisco 678 ADSL Router Overview

Purpose

This chapter provides an overview of the Cisco 678 asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) router. It also describes the general applications available with the Cisco 678.


Note This chapter documents general product features available in the Cisco 678 product line. Please refer to the Release Notes for the Cisco Broadband Operating System Release 2.3.0 for a current list of upgraded software features.

Product Description

The Cisco 678 provides home connectivity to an ADSL service provider network over an ADSL/ATM physical layer. The Cisco 678 receives and transmits at up to the following adaptive rates:

A 10/100BaseT interface is provided for connection to an Ethernet LAN or Ethernet-equipped PC.

Back Panel Connectors

Table 1-1 describes the function of the connectors and switches on the Cisco 678 back panel. See Figure 1-2 for the location of the connectors.

Connector Label Connector Description

PWR

Power connector

ENET (yellow)

Ethernet connector---Connects to the Ethernet port on your PC, laptop using the No Hub (crossover) Ethernet cable supplied with your unit, or LAN hub using a straight-through cable.

MGMT (light blue)

RJ-45 management connector---Connects to the serial port on your PC or laptop.

WALL (lavendar)

ADSL connector---Connects to the wall jack.

PHONE (gray)

Phone connector---Connects to a microfilter, then to a telephone.

System Memory

The Cisco 678 ADSL router is equipped with 4 MB of Extended Data Out (EDO) DRAM.

Environmental Constraints

The Cisco 678 ADSL router operates in an ambient temperature environment of 32º to 104ºF (0º to 40ºC) and is stored in an ambient temperature environment of -40ºto 185ºF (-40ºto 85ºC).
