This chapter offers information about installing your Cisco 673 symmetric digital subscriber line (SDSL) router. If you are not familiar with the hardware or software parameters presented here, please consult your service provider (SP) for the values needed.
Table 2-1lists the tasks to be completed when installing the Cisco 673.

Check the shipping carton carefully to ensure that the contents include the items you ordered. You can identify the Cisco 673 SDSL router by the product name on the bottom of the front end of the router (the end with the LEDs).
The contents of your carton may vary depending on your equipment provider. Table 2-2 shows a list of the standard contents of a Cisco 673 shipment.
| Contents | Description |
|---|---|
Cisco 673 | Cisco's SDSL router for home/office use |
Cisco 673 SDSL Router Installation and Operation Guide (this publication) | Technical documentation for the Cisco 673 |
Cisco Broadband Operating System User Guide | Technical documentation for Cisco's Broadband Operating System used by the Cisco 673 |
Power supply | North American AC power adapter |
WALL/SDSL cable (Lavender) | RJ-11 telephone cable (14 ft) |
ENET/Ethernet cable (Yellow) | Yellow Ethernet category 5 "no-hub" twisted pair crossover cable (6 ft) |
Your shipment might optionally contain a management cable (RJ-45-to-DB-9 serial cable, light blue in color). See Figure 2-1.

If any items you ordered were not delivered, please contact Cisco or your equipment provider. (For pin assignments of connectors used with your Cisco 673, refer to "Cisco 673 Connectors")
The following hardware is necessary to configure and use the Cisco 673:
This section describes how to set up the hardware environment for your Cisco 673 SDSL router.
To configure your Cisco 673, follow these steps:
Step 1 Connect the RJ-45 connector on the serial cable to the Cisco 673 management port. See Figure 2-2.

Step 2 Connect the other end of the serial cable to the computer serial port. (If your computer has only a DB-25 serial port, a DB--9-to-DB25 adapter is needed for connection.)
Step 3 Use the terminal access program from your PC's operating system to access the Cisco 673.
Step 4 Log in to CBOS as outlined in the "Log On to the Cisco Broadband Operating System" section.
For the best access to the Cisco Operating System, use your terminal emulation program (such as HyperTerminal in Windows) to set your COM protocol to the following settings:
Figure 2-3 shows the cabling configuration for the Cisco 673 SDSL router.

You can cable two Cisco 673s in a "back-to-back" configuration. This allows one Cisco 673 to terminate the traffic of a second Cisco 673 without Central Office (CO) equipment. See the following instructions for back-to-back cabling information:
Step 1 Plug one end of the SDSL cable into the WALL port on one of the Cisco 673 units.
Step 2 Plug the remaining end of the SDSL cable into the WALL port of the second Cisco 673 unit.
After you cable the Cisco 673s, you must configure them. See the "Select a Connection Mode" section for more information.
Step 1 Connect power to the Cisco 673 by plugging one end of the power supply into an appropriate electrical outlet and the other end into the power connector on the back of the unit.
Step 2 When you have powered up the Cisco 673, check that the Power LED is ON. If the Power LED does not illuminate, see the "Troubleshooting" section.
