Installation Procedures

This chapter offers information about installing your Cisco 633 symmetric digital subscriber line (SDSL) channel service unit/digital service unit (CSU/DSU) modem. If you are not familiar with the hardware or software parameters presented here, please consult your service provider (SP) for the values needed.

2.1 Checklist for Installing the Cisco 633

Table 2-1 lists the tasks to be completed when installing the Cisco 633.

2.2 Unpack the Shipping Carton

Check the shipping carton carefully to ensure that the contents include the items you ordered. You can identify the Cisco 633 SDSL modem by the product name on the bottom of the front end of the modem (the end with the light-emitting diodes (LEDs)).

The contents of your carton may vary depending on your equipment provider. Table 2-2 shows a list of the standard contents of a Cisco 633 shipment.

If any items you ordered were not delivered, please contact Cisco or your equipment provider. (For pin assignments of connectors used with your Cisco 633, refer to "Cisco 633 Connectors")

2.3 Hardware Requirements

The hardware and software requirements necessary to install and configure the Cisco 633 include:

Note If only a DB-25 serial port is available on the computer, you must also use a DB-9-to-DB-25 adapter to connect the serial cable to the computer.

2.4 Set Up the Cisco 633 Hardware Environment

This section describes how to set up the hardware environment for your Cisco 633 SDSL modem.

2.4.1 Connect the Management Port to the Serial Port

To configure your Cisco 633, follow these steps:

Step 1 Connect the RJ-45 connector on the serial cable to the Cisco 633 management port. See Figure 2-2.

Figure 2-2: Cisco 633 Management Port Cabling

Step 2 Connect the other end of the serial cable to the computer serial port. (If your computer has only a DB-25 serial port, a DB--9-to-DB25 adapter is needed for connection.)

Step 3 Use the terminal access program from your PC's operating system to access the Cisco 633.

Step 4 Log in to CBOS as outlined in the "Log on to CBOS" section.

2.4.2 Configure the Serial Port

For the best access to the Cisco Operating System, use your terminal emulation program (such as HyperTerminal in Windows) to set your COM protocol to the following settings:

2.5 Connect All Cables to the Network

Figure 2-3 shows the cabling configuration for the Cisco 633 SDSL modem.

Figure 2-3: Cabling Configuration for the Cisco 633

Back-to-Back Cisco 633 Cabling

You can cable two Cisco 633s in a "back-to-back" configuration. This allows one Cisco 633 to terminate the traffic of a second Cisco 633 without Central Office (CO) equipment. See the following instructions for back-to-back cabling information:

Note Check with your SP before implementing the back-to-back configuration

Step 1 Plug one end of the SDSL cable into the WALL port on one of the Cisco 633 units.

Step 2 Plug the remaining end of the SDSL cable into the WALL port of the second Cisco 633 unit.

After you cable the Cisco 633s, you must configure them. See the "Configuration Procedures"for more information.

2.6 Power On the Cisco 633

Step 1 Connect power to the Cisco 633 by plugging one end of the power supply into an appropriate electrical outlet and the other end into the power connector on the back of the unit.

Note Cisco recommends that you unplug your Cisco 633 unit when you are not using it.

Step 2 When you have powered up the Cisco 633, check that the Power LED is ON. If the Power LED does not illuminate, see "Troubleshooting," for more information.

You have now successfully installed the Cisco 633. See Chapter 3, "Configuration Procedures" for information on configuring the Cisco 633 for use.

2.7 Warnings and Cautions

Warning To prevent dangerous overloading of the power circuit, read the label on the rear of the Cisco 633 that indicates maximum power load ratings. Failure to follow these rating guidelines could result in a dangerous situation.
Warning Do not use this product near water; for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool.
Warning Never install telephone wiring during an electrical storm.
Warning Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet locations.
Warning Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.
Caution Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
Warning Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm. There may be a remote risk of electric shock from lightning.
Warning Do not use a telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.
