Product Overview

1.1 Introduction

This chapter provides an overview of the Cisco 627 asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) modem. It also describes all general applications.

1.2 Product Description

The Cisco 627 ADSL DMT modem is designed for home connectivity to an ADSL service provider network over an ATM 25 Mbits per second (ATM-25) physical layer. The Cisco 627 receives up to a maximum rate of 8.032 Mbps (downstream rate) and transmits up to a maximum rate of .832 Mbps (upstream rate). An ATM-25 interface provides a connection to either a customer premises equipment (CPE) router or an ATM-25-equipped PC.

Figure 1-1 illustrates the Cisco 627 ADSL DMT modem.

1.2.1 Product Features

The following lists define the Cisco 627 product features.

Hardware Features

• Discrete Multi-Tone DSL (DMT Issue 2 encoding) interface, with maximum receive data rates up to 8.032 Mbps and transmit data rates up to .832 Mbps

• ATM-25 interface

• ATM cell delineation adherent to ITU-T I.432

• Supports ATM Forum-compliant permanent virtual circuits (PVCs)

• Status LEDs indicating ATM-25 and ADSL activity

• Fully compatible with the Cisco 6100 and 6200 Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) ATM multiplexers

1.2.2 Back Panel Connectors

Table 1-1 describes the function of the connectors and switches on the Cisco 627 back panel. See Figure 1-2 for the location of the connectors described in Table 1-1.

1.2.3 System Memory

The Cisco 627 comes with 2 MB of Extended Data Out (EDO) DRAM.

1.2.4 Environmental Constraints

• Ambient operating temperature 32º to 104ºF (0º to 40ºC)

• Ambient storage temperature -40ºto 185ºF (-40ºto 85ºC)

1.3 Network Management Applications

The Cisco 627 supports the following networked system management applications:

• Telnet server described in the "Using Telnet" section

• TFTP server described in the "Using a Trivial File Transfer Protocol Server" section
