Follow these guidelines when you handle any electrical equipment:
Use the following guidelines when you handle any equipment that is connected to telephone wiring or to other network cabling:
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, which can occur when electronic cards or components are improperly handled, results in complete or intermittent failures. Port adapters and processor modules consist of printed circuit boards that are fixed in metal carriers. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and connectors are integral components of the carrier. Although the metal carrier helps to protect the board from ESD, use a preventive antistatic strap during handling.
Following are guidelines for preventing ESD damage:
![]() | Warning For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. Ensure the measurement is between 1 and 10 megohms. |
The I/O interface module connects to the Cisco 6260 backplane at the upper front side of the Cisco 6260 chassis. The Cisco 6260 ships with an I/O module pre-installed, which supports the type of NI-2 card that is installed in the chassis:
Six rows of six wire-wrap pins are located on the right side of the I/O module faceplate. These pins support the following items:
Each of the wire-wrap pins is connected to the NI-2 cards that are present in the Cisco 6260 chassis; however, only one NI-2 card manages the alarms. The alarm cutoff switch shuts off the audible alarms. Figure 1 shows the location of the wire-wrap pins on the faceplate of the I/O module.

Table 1 maps the wire-wrap pins to the alarms supported by the NI-2 card through the Cisco 6260 backplane.
| Row | Pin 1 | Pin 2 | Pin 3 | Pin 4 | Pin 5 | Pin 6 |

Table 1 uses the following abbreviations:
An alarm cutoff switch is located on the NI-2 card faceplate. Use this switch to turn off audible alarms generated by the Cisco 6260 system software.
The Cisco 6260 platform is shipped with the I/O interface module installed. However, it is a field-replaceable unit. The following sections describe the procedures for removing and installing an I/O interface module for the Cisco 6260 platform.
To remove the I/O interface module, complete the following steps:
Step 1 For an I/O module that operates with DS3-type NI-2 cards, detach all DS3 cables and wire-wrap pin connections.
For an I/O module that operates with OC-3-type NI-2 cards, detach all wire-wrap pin connections.
Step 2 Locate the two screws on the faceplate of the module that secure it to the Cisco 6260 chassis (Figure 3).

Step 3 Unscrew the module retaining screws.
Step 4 Remove the I/O module from the chassis by carefully pulling the module horizontally away from the chassis.
To install the I/O interface module in the Cisco 6260 chassis, complete the following steps:
Step 1 Carefully align the module with the Cisco 6260 backplane on the upper front side of the chassis.
Step 2 Secure the I/O interface module to the chassis with its two retaining screws.
Step 3 If you are using a DS3 connection to the network, attach the DS3 cable.
The I/O interface module that operates with DS3-type NI-2 cards has three pairs of DS3 75-ohm coaxial BNC connectors on the left side of the module faceplate. The pairs are labeled P1, P2, and P3. The receive (RX) connector is located above the transmit (TX) connector in each pair.
Step 4 Wire wrap the wire-wrap pins as specified in Table 1.
Step 5 Reboot the system.
This section defines words and acronyms used in this guide.
Refer to the following documents for more information about the components and operation of the Cisco 6260:
In these ATM software manuals, look for information pertaining to the LightStream 1010 ATM switch, which uses the same software base as the Cisco 6260:
