Preventive Maintenance

Preventive Maintenance

This chapter describes two preventive maintenance tasks for the Cisco 6160 digital subscriber line (DSL) access concentrator:

Backing Up Software

We recommend that you maintain, on a TFTP server, current copies of two files for each Cisco 6160 system:

If you keep copies of these files on a TFTP server, you can easily recover from a fault in an NI-2 card: simply replace the NI-2 card, and download the software image and configuration file from the TFTP server. Remember to update your backup files whenever you change your configuration or upgrade your Cisco IOS software.

Follow these steps to copy the Cisco IOS software image and configuration file to a TFTP server:

Step 1 Log in to the Cisco 6160 node whose software you wish to back up.

Step 2 Enter the dir command to display the names of the files:

6160# dir

Step 3 Enter a copy command to copy the IOS software file to the node's TFTP server:

6160# copy flash:<image-name> tftp

Step 4 Enter a second copy command to copy the configuration file to the node's TFTP server:

6160# copy running-config tftp

Air Filter Maintenance

You must periodically clean or replace the air filter in the Cisco 6160 DSL access concentrator.

Once a month (or more often in dusty environments), examine the air filter and clean or replace it if it is dirty. Keep a log recording the date of each filter cleaning and filter replacement.

You can clean or replace the air filter while the Cisco 6160 remains powered up and fully operational.

The remainder of this section explains how to remove, clean, and replace the filter.

Required Tools and Equipment

To clean the air filter, you need one of the following:

A new air filter (product number 6160-AF-01= for a 5-pack) is the only part you need if you decide that the old filter needs replacing.

Removing an Air Filter

This procedure tells you how to remove an air filter from the Cisco 6160 chassis.

Step 1 Unscrew the two captive screws and pull off the perforated metal bezel that covers the air filter. (See Figure 3-1.)

Step 2 Remove the filter from the chassis.

Step 3 If you are replacing the air filter, discard it and skip to the "Replacing the Air Filter" section.

Step 4 If you wish to clean the air filter, go to the next procedure, "Cleaning the Air Filter."

Cleaning the Air Filter

This section tells you how to clean a Cisco 6160 air filter. Skip to the next procedure if you are replacing an old filter with a new one.

Use one of the following methods to clean the air filter:

Replacing the Air Filter

Use this procedure to insert the air filter into the chassis.

Step 1 Hold the air filter so that the side with the metal grille is facing the chassis.

Step 2 Insert the filter into its slot at the bottom of the chassis.

Step 3 Replace the bezel that covers the air filter and tighten the captive screws to secure the bezel.
