This document describes the procedures you should follow to install or replace the blower assembly and power entry module (PEM), and for maintaining the air filter on the Cisco 6160 digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) with NI-2. Currently, the Cisco 6160 supports the NI-2 card but not the NI-1 card.

The Cisco 6160 NI-2 DSLAM is a member of the Cisco 6000 DSL product family that provides end-to-end service by handling voice or data traffic, or both, between a subscriber home or office, a telephone central office (CO) facility, and various networks.

Blower Assembly Description

The blower assembly provides forced air cooling required by all Cisco 6160 system circuit cards. The blower assembly provides the following features:

Power Entry Module Description

The power entry module (PEM) is the DC power source for the Cisco 6160. The Cisco 6160 chassis has two PEM slots. The PEM provides the following features:

Replacing the Blower Assembly

The Cisco 6160 blower assembly is a field replaceable unit (FRU) and is located in the top slot of the Cisco 6160 chassis (Figure 1).

To replace a blower assembly in the Cisco 6160, follow these procedures:

Removing the Blower Assembly

The blower assembly is hot swappable. You do not need to power down the Cisco 6160 to replace the blower assembly. However, if you must remove the blower assembly from an operating Cisco 6160, replace it within 5 minutes. If that is not possible, power down the system to avoid thermal damage.

To remove the blower assembly from the Cisco 6160 chassis, follow these steps:


Warning Before you remove the blower assembly from its slot, make sure you grasp it firmly to prevent it from slipping to the floor. This unit is heavier than it appears.


Step 1   Loosen the two captive screws on the blower assembly faceplate.

Step 2   Grasp the two captive screws, and slowly slide the blower assembly out until it catches. (Do not pull the unit completely out. It is supported only by the captive screws.)

Step 3   Locate and press the safety catch (see Figure 1) on the right side of the blower assembly.

Step 4   While pressing the safety catch, firmly grasp the sides of the blower assembly and slowly remove the blower assembly from its slot.


Installing the Blower Assembly

To install a new blower assembly, follow these steps:


Step 1   Slide the blower assembly into the blower assembly slot (see Figure 1) of the Cisco 6160.

Step 2   Press the blower assembly into its slot. Ensure that the blower assembly connector mates with the connector on the backplane.

Step 3   Tighten the two captive screws on the blower assembly faceplate.

Step 4   Verify that the INPUT OK LED is green. At startup, the LED may flash red momentarily before it changes to green. This is normal at startup.


Confirming Blower Assembly Installation

To confirm that the Cisco IOS software recognizes the new blower assembly, follow these steps:


Step 1   Type the following command:

DSLAM# show hardware chassis

Step 2   Scroll through the data and locate the blower assembly information.

The information displayed on the screen is similar to the following output:

Note   If the information displays as Unreadable or Unknown, the blower assembly was not installed properly or a problem exists with the blower assembly. Install the blower assembly again by following the procedures in this document. If the blower assembly is still not recognized by the system, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC).


Viewing Blower Assembly Operating Environment

To view blower assembly operating information, follow these steps:


Step 1   Type the following command:

DSLAM# show environment all

Step 2   Scroll through the data and locate the blower assembly information.

If the PEM is operating properly, the information displayed on the screen is similar to the following output:

    Fans:

Replacing the Power Entry Module

The Cisco 6160 PEM is a field replaceable unit (FRU), and is located in the bottom right slot of the Cisco 6160 chassis (Figure 2). If you have a redundant system, a PEM is located in the top right slot (PEM 2) and the bottom right slot (PEM 1).

To replace a PEM in the Cisco 6160, follow these procedures:


Caution If you remove a PEM from the Cisco 6160 chassis in which a second PEM is installed and providing power, the chassis continues to operate normally. If you plan to remove the only operating PEM from the chassis, power down the system before you begin.

Powering Down the Cisco 6160

To power down the Cisco 6160, follow these steps:


Step 1   Use the Cisco IOS copy command to save any configuration changes to NVRAM:

DSLAM# copy running-config startup-config

Step 2   Set the circuit breakers on both PEMs to the OFF (0) position.


Removing a PEM


Note   If you are removing the only operating PEM from an active system, follow the previous procedure, "Powering Down the Cisco 6160," before performing these steps.

To remove a PEM from the Cisco 6160 chassis, follow these steps:


Step 1   On the front of the PEM, ensure that the circuit breaker is in the OFF (0) position.

Step 2   On the front of the PEM, loosen the two captive screws.

Step 3   Grasp the handle on the right of the PEM and pull the PEM from the PEM slot.

Step 4   Place the PEM in an antistatic bag.


Installing a PEM

To install a PEM in the Cisco 6160 chassis, follow these steps:


Step 1   Verify that the circuit breaker on the PEM you are installing is in the OFF (0) position.

Step 2   Firmly slide the PEM into the PEM slot, making sure that the connector on the back of the PEM mates with the backplane connector and guide pins.

Step 3   To secure the PEM in place, tighten the two captive screws.

Step 4   Set the circuit breaker to the ON (1) position.

The INPUT OK LED illuminates green.


Note   For information about wiring the newly installed PEM to DC power and ground, refer to the Cisco 6160 Hardware Installation and Troubleshooting Guide.


Powering On the Cisco 6160

To power on the Cisco 6160, follow these steps:


Step 1   Set the circuit breakers on the PEM to the ON (1) position.

The OUT FAIL LED might flash briefly.

Step 2   Verify that the INPUT OK LED lights.


Note   If the INPUT OK LED does not light, or if other issues arise, refer to the Cisco 6160 Hardware Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for troubleshooting instructions.


Confirming PEM Installation

To confirm that the Cisco IOS software recognizes the new PEM, follow these steps:


Step 1   Type the following command:

DSLAM# show hardware chassis

Step 2   Scroll through the data and locate the PEM information.

The information displayed on the screen is similar to the following output:

If the PEM is still not recognized by the system, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

Maintaining the Air Filter

You must periodically clean or replace the air filter in the Cisco 6160. Refer to the Cisco 6160 Hardware Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for detailed information.

Use the following guidelines when you work with equipment that is connected to telephone wiring or to other network cabling:

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, which can occur when electronic cards or components are improperly handled, results in complete or intermittent failures. Port adapters and processor cards consist of printed circuit boards that are fixed in metal carriers. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and connectors are integral components of the carrier. Although the metal carrier helps to protect the board from ESD, use a preventive antistatic strap during handling.

Follow these guidelines to prevent ESD damage:


Caution Periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. Ensure that the measurement is between 1 and 10 megohms.

FCC Class A Compliance

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio-frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in which case you will be required to correct the interference at your own expense.
