Cisco 6160 I/O Card
Installation and Configuration

Product Number: 6160-1-I/O-1(=)

This document describes the procedures you should follow to replace the input/output (I/O) card on the Cisco 6160 digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) with NI-2. Currently, the Cisco 6160 supports the NI-2 card but not the NI-1 card.

The Cisco 6160 NI-2 DSLAM is a member of the Cisco 6000 DSL product family that provides end-to-end service by handling voice or data traffic, or both, between a subscriber home or office, a telephone central office (CO) facility, and various networks.

Contents

This document includes the following sections:

Note   Before you replace an I/O card, refer to the "Safety Guidelines" section.

Product Description

Cisco Systems currently offers one type of I/O card for the Cisco 6160. The I/O card:

A single I/O card connects to 1 DS3 or 1 OC-3c trunk and 2 DS3 subtend ports. A multi-rack, multi-chassis arrangement allows for expansion to 12 subtend ports.

Warning A metal EMI cover is permanently installed over the I/O card to protect against radiated EMI emissions during operation. The EMI cover should be installed at all times during normal operation.

Parts and Tools

Have the following tools available before you begin:

Caution Do not exceed a torque control of 4 foot-pounds if you use a power or cordless driver.

Replacing the I/O Card

The I/O card for the Cisco 6160 is a field replaceable unit (FRU) and is installed on the Cisco 6160 backplane (see Figure 3). The backplane is located on the back side of the Cisco 6160 chassis. Use the procedures in the following sections when you replace an I/O card on the Cisco 6160.

Warning Power off the unit before you begin.

Caution Static voltages as low as 30 volts can cause latent damage to circuitry on the I/O card. Observe all standard antistatic procedures (for example, wear a ground strap).

Powering Off the Cisco 6160

To power off the Cisco 6160, follow these steps:

Step 1   To save configuration changes to NVRAM, type the following command:

DSLAM# copy running-config startup-config

Step 2   Set the circuit breakers on both PEMs to the OFF (0) position.

Removing the Existing I/O Card Cover

Figure 1 shows the I/O card cover.

Figure 1: Cisco 6160 I/O Card Cover

Note   The wire wrap connectors are located on the I/O card beneath the cover.

Figure 2 shows the placement of the I/O card cover on the Cisco 6160 backplane.

Figure 2: I/O Card Cover Placement on Cisco 6160 Backplane

To remove the I/O card cover, follow these steps:

Step 1   Mark and disconnect all DS3 cables from the six BNC jacks (see
Figure 1).

On the I/O card cover, the BNC jacks are labeled Port 1, Port 2, and Port 3, with each port having a TX and an RX connection. (On the I/O card, the BNC jacks are labeled J9, J10, J11, J12, J13, and J14.)

Step 2   Mark and disconnect all wires from the I/O card wire wrap connectors (alarm contacts) (see Figure 1).

Step 3   Remove the ten M3.5 screws from the I/O card cover, and then remove the cover.

Step 4   Store the screws and the cover in a safe place for reinstallation.

Removing the Existing I/O Card

Figure 3 shows the placement of the I/O card on the Cisco 6160 backplane.

Figure 3: I/O Card Placement on Cisco 6160 Backplane

To remove the I/O card, follow these steps:

Step 1   Remove the ten standoffs (and washers) from the I/O card.

Step 2   Store the removed standoffs (and washers) in a safe place for reinstallation.

Step 3   Grasp the sides, or top and bottom, of the I/O card, and gently pull the I/O card away from the P3 and P9 connectors on the Cisco 6160 backplane.

Step 4   Place the I/O card in an antistatic bag or in a box lined with antistatic material.

Installing the New I/O Card

To install a new I/O card, follow these steps:

Step 1   Hold the I/O card vertically with its component side (primary side) facing you.

Step 2   Looking down from the top of the card, slide the alignment keys on the I/O card J15 and J16 receptacles into the P3 and P9 connectors on the Cisco 6160 backplane.

Step 3   Carefully press the I/O card receptacles into the connectors on the Cisco 6160 backplane until the I/O card is in place.

Step 4   Ensure that all of the mounting holes on the I/O card line up with the standoff holes on the backplane.

Step 5   Fasten the I/O card to the Cisco 6160 backplane by inserting the ten standoffs (and washers) into the ten standoff holes.

Step 6   Tighten the standoffs to hold the I/O card firmly in place.

Caution Do not exceed a torque control of 4 foot-pounds. Doing so can damage the I/O card.

Replacing the I/O Card Cover

To replace the I/O card cover, follow these steps:

Step 1   Align the ten mounting holes on the I/O card cover with the ten standoffs installed on the I/O card.

Step 2   Fasten the cover over the I/O card by inserting the M3.5 screws into the mounting holes of the ten standoffs.

Caution Do not exceed a torque control of 4 foot-pounds.

Step 3   If you disconnected the DS3 coaxial cables from the BNC jacks in the "Removing the Existing I/O Card Cover" section, reconnect them.

Step 4   If you disconnected the wire wrap connectors (alarm contacts) in the "Removing the Existing I/O Card Cover" section, reconnect them.

Powering On the Cisco 6160

To power on the Cisco 6160, follow these steps:

Step 1   Set the circuit breakers on the PEMs to the ON (1) position.

The OUT FAIL LEDs might flash briefly.

Step 2   Verify that the INPUT OK LED lights.

Note   If the INPUT OK LED does not light or if other issues arise, refer to the Cisco 6160 Hardware Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for troubleshooting instructions.

Confirming I/O Card Installation

To confirm that the Cisco IOS software recognizes the new I/O card, follow these steps:

Step 1   Type the following command:

DSLAM# show hardware chassis

Step 2   Scroll through the data and locate the I/O card information.

The information displayed on the screen is similar to the following output:

Wiring Outside the Central Office

Use the following guidelines when you work with equipment that is connected to telephone wiring or to other network cabling:

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, which can occur when electronic cards or components are improperly handled, results in complete or intermittent failures. Use an antistatic strap during handling.

Follow these guidelines to prevent ESD damage:

Caution Periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. Ensure that the measurement is between 1 and 10 megohms.

FCC Class A Compliance

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio-frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in which case you will be required to correct the interference at your own expense.

Note   Modifying the equipment without Cisco's authorization may result in the equipment no longer complying with FCC requirements for Class A or Class B digital devices. In that event, your right to use the equipment may be limited by FCC regulations, and you may be required to correct any interference to radio or television communications at your own expense.
