This chapter provides physical and functional overviews of the ONS 15190 IP Transport Concentrator. It contains physical descriptions of the concentrator hardware and major components, and functional descriptions of the hardware-related features.
The ONS 15190 is a telco-grade, high-speed, layer 1 intelligent concentrator that complements the Cisco Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) family of products. Supporting up to 16 OC-12c/STM-4 rings or 8 OC-48c/STM-16 rings, the ONS 15190 enables the definition of logical rings over physical star infrastructure in DPT environments.
ONS 15190 features follow:
The ONS 15190 provides a high-level of system redundancy, hot-swappable cards, a 6-fan cooling unit, and system temperature monitoring. The unit can be configured and controlled locally via a RS-232C serial connection or remotely via Ethernet.
ONS 15190 overview information is presented in the following sections:
The ONS 15190 chassis contains 16 physical slots and a fan mechanism at the bottom.

The ONS 15190 chassis can contain the following cards:

Slots titled C1 and C2 in the unit are for controller cards. One card is required; the second is for system redundancy.

Three LED signals at the top of the controller card indicate the operational status of the card:
The RESET button may be used to reset the card.
The CONSOLE/MAINT (maintenance) connections are used to connect the unit to a local RS-232C cable in order to configure and control the ONS 15190.

Note You can connect only to one of the CONSOLE ports at any one time because this port controls both controller cards. |
The Ethernet connection is used to connect the unit to a LAN network. The Ethernet ports of both controller cards should be connected to a LAN network.
Two-port OC-12c/STM-4 and OC-48c/STM-16 line cards are used to connect two OC-12c/STM-4 or OC-48c/STM-16 connections, respectively, to the ONS 15190. Four-port OC-12c/STM-4 line cards can be used to connect up to four OC-12c/STM-4 connections each.

Note OC-12/STM-4 nodes or line cards cannot be connected to OC-48/STM-16 nodes or line cards. |
Each line card contains three LEDs (PWR, ACT, FAIL) to indicate the operational status of the card (See the section "Controller Card"). When the line card is initialized, the ACT LED flashes very fast; when the card is operational, the ACT LED flashes at a constant rate of once per second in synchronization with the active controller card.
In addition, each line card contains either two or four ports. Each port contains a pair of optical fiber connectors that are used to connect one transmit and one receive line from the connected node.

Each port has five associated LEDs that indicate the status of the respective connection:
The bidirectional wavelength division multiplexing (BWDM) line card is used to connect two bidirectional WDM fiber-optic connections.

Each line card contains three LEDs (PWR, ACT, FAIL) to indicate the operational status of the card. (See section "Controller Card".) When the line card is initialized, the ACT LED flashes very fast; when the card is operational, the ACT LED flashes at a constant rate of once per second in synchronization with the active controller card.

In addition, each BWDM line card contains two ports. Each port contains one optical fiber connector that is used to connect one bidirectional line from the connected node. When connecting BWDM cards between ONS 15190 systems, port 1 of the BWDM card must be connected to port 2 of the second BWDM card and visa versa.
Each port has five associated LEDs which indicate the status of the respective connection:
Up to five switch cards may be installed in the ONS 15190 unit. For OC-12c/ STM-4 operation with two-port line cards, one switch card is required, with a second card providing 1+1 redundancy. For OC-12c/STM-4 operation with four-port line cards, five switch cards are required for normal operation and complete system redundancy.

Note The ONS 15190 with four-port OC-12c/STM-4 line cards can be operated with only two switch cards; however system redundancy and use of a sniff node are only enabled when all five switch cards are operational. If the number of switch cards is reduced from five to two, a controller card must be active to ensure proper operation of the line cards. |
For OC-48c/STM-16, four switch cards are required, with the fifth providing 4+1 redundancy. Each switch card contains three LEDs (PWR, ACT, FAIL) to indicate the operational status of the card. (See section "Controller Card".) Switch cards are hot swappable and feature automatic fault detection and switch over with no data loss.

The fan tray contains six fans, Operation of the system can continue almost indefinitely even if one of the fans is not operational. If any of the fans fail, a warning message appears on the screen connected to the control card. It is recommended to have a spare fan tray available in the event of a fan failure.
By default, the system will continue operation as long as the cards' temperature remains below 167°F (75°C). If the temperature on any of the individual cards exceeds this temperature, the card stops operation. This temperature-protection mechanism can be changed via the CLI commands.
The temperature of any card can also be verified via the CLI, as shown in the following example:
admin> card l1 show status
