About This Guide

This section discusses the objectives, intended audience, and organization of this installation and configuration guide, and defines the conventions used to convey instructions and noteworthy information.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. Document Objectives

This publication contains specific procedures for the initial hardware installation, and procedures for performing the basic system configuration of your Cisco 7500 series router. The Cisco 7500 series includes four routers: the Cisco 7505, Cisco 7507, Cisco 7513, and Cisco 7576.

The Cisco 7505 and Cisco 7507 routers arrive with all processor modules installed; however, the Cisco 7513 and Cisco 7576 routers arrive with processor modules individually packaged; you need to install these in your system. After you install the hardware and perform a basic system configuration, you will then use the appropriate software configuration publications and companion publications to more completely configure your system and its interfaces.

Audience

Setting up and maintaining a network requires the knowledge and expertise of people with a variety of skills. In many cases, the people responsible for installing hardware and wiring are not the ones who configure the software and administer the network; therefore, this publication provides information specific to installing the router hardware and performing a basic system configuration. To use this publication, you should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices, and basic network configuration, and preferably have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.

Document Organization

The organization of this publication follows a recommended linear installation sequence starting with the chapter "Cisco 7500 Series Product Overview," and continuing through the chapter "Performing a Basic Configuration of your System."

Following is a brief description of each chapter:

• Chapter 1, "Cisco 7500 Series Product Overview," describes the physical properties of each of the three Cisco 7500 series routers. The remaining sections of this chapter describe router components, which are considered to be standard equipment and ship with each router, as appropriate.

• Chapter 2, "Preparing for Installation," describes safety considerations, tools required, an overview of the installation, and procedures you should perform before the actual installation of your Cisco  7500 series router.

• Chapter 3, "Installing a Cisco 7500 Series Router," provides information for installing the router hardware. The chapter includes a section describing generic installation requirements; it also includes additional sections for each Cisco  7500 series router.

• Chapter 4, "Performing a Basic Configuration of the System," provides simple procedures for completing a basic system configuration of your Cisco  7500 series router, and for checking and saving this configuration to system memory.

• Chapter 5, "Maintaining the Cisco 7505," describes the procedures required to perform routine maintenance and to remove and replace field replaceable units (FRUs) in your Cisco  7505 router.

• Chapter 6, "Maintaining the Cisco 7507," describes the procedures required to perform routine maintenance and to remove and replace field replaceable units (FRUs) in your Cisco  7507 router.

• Chapter 7, "Maintaining the Cisco 7513 and Cisco 7576," describes the procedures required to perform routine maintenance and to remove and replace field replaceable units (FRUs) in your Cisco  7513 or Cisco 7576 router.

• Appendix A, "Troubleshooting the Installation," describes basic troubleshooting guidelines, should you have difficulty with your Cisco  7500 series router installation.

• Appendix B, "Upgrading or Replacing DRAM on Cisco 7500 Series Route Switch Processors," describes the procedures required to upgrade the dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) devices on the RSP(s) in your Cisco  7500 series routers.

Document Conventions

This publication uses the following conventions:

• The symbol ^ represents the key labeled Control.

For example, the key combination ^z means hold down the Control key while you press the Z  key.

• Cross-references to additional or related information within this publication specify the title of the section that contains the information. For example, "Refer to the section `Document Conventions.'" For publications on the Documentation CD-ROM, these cross-references represent direct online links.

Command descriptions use these conventions:

• Examples that contain system prompts denote interactive sessions, indicating the commands that you should enter at the prompt. The system prompt indicates the current level of the EXEC command interpreter.

For example, the prompt router> indicates that you should be at the user level, and the prompt router# indicates that you should be at the privileged level. Access to the privileged level usually requires a password. Refer to the related software configuration and reference documentation for additional information.

• Commands and keywords are in boldface font.

• Arguments for which you supply values are in italic font.

• Optional elements are in square brackets ([ ]).

• Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and separated by vertical bars (|).

Examples use these conventions:

• Terminal sessions and sample console screen displays are in screen font.

• Information you enter is in boldface screen font.

• Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are in angle brackets (< >).

• Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets ([ ]).

• Exclamation points (!) at the beginning of a line indicate a comment line.

Caution Means reader be careful. You are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage or loss of data.

Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this publication.

TimeSaver Means the described action saves time. You can save time by performing the action described in the paragraph.

Safety Warnings

Safety warnings appear throughout this publication in procedures that, if performed incorrectly, may harm you. A warning symbol precedes each warning statement.

Warning       Means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents. Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
