Chassis Air Filter Overview

The Cisco 12016 GSR has a serviceable air filter mounted in a swing-out door on the front of the switch fabric card cage. (See Figure 1.) The air filter removes dust from the room air drawn into the router by the two blower modules. (See Figure 2.) Once a month (or more often in dusty environments) you should examine the air filter and replace it if it appears damaged or excessively dirty.

Caution The front and back of the Cisco 12016 GSR must remain unobstructed to ensure adequate air flow and prevent overheating inside the card cage assembly; we recommend at least 6 inches (15.24 cm) of clearance.

Safety Guidelines

Before you begin the replacement procedure, review the safety guidelines in this section to avoid injuring yourself or damaging the equipment.

Safety with Electricity

Follow these basic guidelines when working with any electrical equipment:

In addition, use the guidelines that follow when working with any equipment that is disconnected from a power source, but still connected to telephone or network wiring:

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Many router components can be damaged by static electricity. Some components can be damaged by voltages as low as 30V, while static voltages as high as 35,000V can be generated just by handling plastic or foam packing material, or by sliding assemblies across plastic and carpets. Not exercising the proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions can result in intermittent or complete component failures. To minimize the potential for ESD damage, observe the following guidelines:

Caution You should periodically check the resistance value of the ESD-preventive strap. The measurement should be between 1 and 10 megohms.

Tools and Parts Required

You need the following tools and parts to remove and replace the chassis air filter:

Removing and Replacing the Chassis Air Filter

This section provides two procedures:


Note You can perform these procedures while the router remains powered up.

Removing the Chassis Air Filter

To remove the chassis air filter, follow these steps:

Step 1 Attach an ESD-preventive wrist strap to your wrist and connect the leash to one of the ESD connection sockets on the front of the chassis or to a bare metal surface on the chassis. (See Figure 3.)

Step 2 Loosen the captive screws (two on each side of the air filter door) that fasten the air filter door to the chassis. (See Figure 4.)

Step 3 Grasp the sides of the air filter door front cover and carefully swing the door down, away from the switch fabric card cage. (See Figure 4.)

Caution Be especially careful not to damage the honeycomb screens on the back of the air filter door and within the switch fabric card cage. Damage to the honeycomb screens on the air filter door and within the switch fabric card cage can restrict the air flow and cause an overtemperature condition in the router, as well as affect EMI performance.

Step 4 Push up on the front of the air filter with your palm and finger tips and carefully slide it out of the air filter door. (See Figure 5.)

Step 5 Move the air filter away from the front of the switch fabric card cage so that any dislodged dust will not be drawn into the chassis card cages. Dispose of the air filter in a responsible manner.

Installing the Replacement Chassis Air Filter

To install the replacement chassis air filter, follow these steps:

Step 1 Attach an ESD-preventive wrist strap to your wrist and connect the leash to one of the ESD connection sockets on the front of the chassis or to a bare metal surface on the chassis. (See Figure 3.)

Step 2 Using two hands to support the replacement air filter, orient it so that the metal braces on the back of the air filter face toward the switch fabric card cage.

Step 3 Slide the air filter completely into the air filter door.

Step 4 Grasp the sides of the air filter door front cover and pivot the air filter door up so that it is aligned with the opening of the switch fabric card cage and the four guide pins are inserted in the corresponding holes on each side of the switch fabric card cage. (See Figure 7.)

Caution All four sides of the air filter door are lined with EMI-preventive gaskets consisting of many raised, conductive contacts. Align and seat the door carefully to avoid damaging the EMI-preventive gaskets. A damaged gasket can result in reduced EMI performance.

Step 5 Push firmly on the air filter door until it is seated in the opening of the switch fabric card cage, then tighten the four captive screws.

Caution The air filter door must be closed and secured at all times to maintain correct EMI performance.

FCC Class A Compliance Notice (United States)

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. VCCI Class B Compliance Notice (Japan)

This is a class B product based on the standard of the Voluntary Control Council for Interference from Information Technology Equipment (VCCI). If this is used near a radio or television receiver in a domestic environment, it may cause radio interference. Install and use the equipment according to the instruction manual.
