Preface
This preface describes the purpose of the Cisco 7100 Series VPN Router Installation and Configuration Guide, its intended audience, its organization, and its document conventions. This preface also provides information on how to obtain related documentation and defines some technical terms you need to understand when using
this guide.
This installation guide explains the initial hardware installation and basic configuration procedures for Cisco 7100 series routers. It contains procedures for installing the router hardware, starting up the router, and creating a basic software configuration file. After completing the installation and basic configuration procedures covered in this guide, you will then use the appropriate companion publications to more completely configure your system. For a list of the companion publications, see the "Related Documentation" section.
To use this publication, you should be familiar not only with Cisco router hardware and cabling but also with electronic circuitry and wiring practices. You should also have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.
The major sections of this guide are as follows:
Your Cisco 7100 series router and the Cisco IOS software running on it contain extensive features and functionality, which are documented in the following resources:
- Cisco Documentation CD-ROM package. (For further information, see the "Documentation CD-ROM" section.)
- Cisco Connection Online (CCO). (For contact information, see the "Cisco Connection Online" section.)
- For international agency compliance, safety, and statutory information for WAN interfaces for Cisco 7100 series routers, refer to the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information for Cisco 7100 Series VPN Routers document that shipped with your router.
- For information on installing the Integrated Service Module (ISM) refer to the Integrated Service Adapter and Integrated Service Module Installation and Configuration document that shipped with your ISM.
- For information on installing and replacing field-replaceable units (FRUs), such as memory, on Cisco 7100 series routers, refer to the Installing Field-Replaceable Units in Cisco 7100 Series VPN Routers document that ships with each FRU.

- For information on the modular port adapter installed in your router (if present), refer to the individual documents that ship with each port adapter. For example, the PA-4E Ethernet 10BaseT Port Adapter Installation and Configuration document is shipped with PA-4E port adapter spares and with PA-4E port adapters that are installed in the router.
- For additional information on configuring Cisco 7100 series routers, refer to the Cisco 7100 Series VPN Configuration Guide that shipped with your router. This guide contains configuration information and sample configuration files for Virtual Private Networking (VPN) scenarios.
- For detailed Cisco IOS software configuration information and support, refer to the modular configuration and modular command reference publications in the Cisco IOS software configuration documentation set that corresponds to the software release installed on your Cisco hardware. Specifically, you should refer to the following publications:
- For information on setting up quality of service (QoS), refer to the Quality of Service Solutions Configuration Guide and Quality of Service Solutions Command Reference publications.
- For information on encryption, refer to the Security Configuration Guide and the Security Command Reference publications.

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.
Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.
CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
