1The specific Catalyst RSM/VIP2 model recommended for the PA-MC-8E1 is the VIP2-40, which has 2 MB of SRAM and 32 MB of DRAM. The PA-MC-8E1 is also supported by the VIP2-15 with 1 MB of SRAM and 16 MB of DRAM, but we do not recommend its use with this model.
2If you are using the High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI) single- or dual-port adapter in the Catalyst 5000, 5500, 5505, or 5509 switch, you must install the port adapter on the Catalyst Versatile Interface Processor 2 (VIP2-15 or VIP2-40) Revision 2 (board part number 73-3468-XX, where XX is the version number). Do not use this port adapter in the Catalyst 5000, 5505, or 5509 switch if you are installing it on a Catalyst VIP2 (either VIP2-15 or VIP2-40) module that is not Revision 2. If you fail to comply with this restriction, your system will shut down because of an overload on the power supply.
3You can have only two HSSI single- or dual-port adapters per chassis installed on a Catalyst VIP2-15 or VIP2-40 Revision 2 module used in the Catalyst 5500 switch.
4Cisco IOS Release 11.2(7a)P or a later release of 11.2 P supports half-duplex and binary synchronous communications (Bisync) operation on PA-MC-2E1 and PA-MC-8E1 port adapters in Cisco 7200 series series routers.
5The PA-MC-2E1 or PA-MC-8E1can be used in the VIP2 in all Cisco 7500 series routers using a Route Switch Processor (RSP), and in Cisco 7000 series routers using the RSP7000 and RSP7000CI.

6The specific VIP2 models recommended for the PA-MC-2E1 and PA-MC-8E1 in all Cisco 7500 series routers, and in Cisco 7000 series routers using the RSP7000 and RSP7000CI, are VIP2-40(=), which has 2 MB of SRAM and 32 MB of DRAM, and VIP2-50(=), which has 4 to 8 MB of SRAM and 32 to 128 MB of SDRAM; however, the PA-MC-2E1 and PA-MC-8E1 is also supported by the VIP2-15(=) and VIP2-20= models, but we do not recommend its use with these VIP2 models.
7There are no restrictions on the number of installed PA-MC-2E1 or PA-MC-8E1port adapters when Cisco 7000 or Cisco 7500 series routers are running Cisco IOS Release 11.1(7) or a later release of 11.1. The PA-MC-2E1 or PA-MC-8E1 can be installed in either port adapter slot 0 or slot 1 on the VIP2 or VIP4.
8The VIP4 provides 64 or 256 MB of 100-MHz synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) as the central processing unit (CPU) memory (also called program memory), and 64 of 100-MHz SDRAM as the packet memory.

For configuration guidelines on port adapters in the Cisco 7200 series, refer to the Cisco 7200 Series Port Adapter Hardware Configuration Guidelines.

Electrical Equipment Guidelines

Follow these basic guidelines when working with any electrical equipment:

Telephone Wiring Guidelines

Use the following guidelines when working with any equipment that is connected to telephone wiring or to other network cabling:

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, which can occur when electronic cards or components are improperly handled, results in complete or intermittent failures. Port adapters and processor modules comprise printed circuit boards that are fixed in metal carriers. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and connectors are integral components of the carrier. Although the metal carrier helps to protect the board from ESD, use a preventive antistatic strap during handling.

Following are guidelines for preventing ESD damage:

Caution For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. The measurement should be between 1 and 10 megohms (Mohm).

FCC Class A Compliance

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio-frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in which case users will be required to correct the interference at their own expense.

You can determine whether your equipment is causing interference by turning it off. If the interference stops, it was probably caused by the Cisco equipment or one of its peripheral devices. If the equipment causes interference to radio or television reception, try to correct the interference by using one or more of the following measures:

Note   The PA-MC-2E1and PA-MC-8E1 port adapter has been designed to meet these requirements. Modifications to this product that are not authorized by Cisco Systems, Inc., could void the various approvals and negate your authority to operate the product.

BABT Compliance

The BABT607116 marking on the PA-MC-2E1 or PA-MC-8E1 signifies that it meets United Kingdom directive 607116 and has been designed to BABT standards. The BABT label is located on the top of the PA-MC-2E1 or PA-MC-8E1; Figure 2-1 shows the BABT label for the PA-MC-2E1 or PA-MC-8E1.

Figure 2-1: BABT Label for PA-MC-2E1 and PA-MC-8E1 Serial Port Adapter

ITI-T Compliance

ITI-T recommendation G.823 specifies that it is important to restrict jitter gain. Figure 4 of G.823 shows a typical jitter transfer characteristic. (Note that small jitter gain is allowed.) British Standard 328: Section 8.1 1990 gives the allowable gain as 0.5 dB.

The PA-MC-2E1 or PA-MC-8E1 line mode clocking complies with these sections.

TBR24 Compliance

When the PA-MC-2E1 and PA-MC-8E1 is in line clocking mode, jitter is not attenuated, and any jitter received is transferred to the line. If input jitter exceeds the limits of TBR24, then output jitter will not meet TBR24 transfer specifications. Line clocking mode is intended for use only where the connection involves a single hop, and where clock timing will not be transferred to other network equipment.

When not in line clocking mode, the PA-MC-2E1 and PA-MC-8E1 complies with TBR24 standards.
