Product Number: MAS-UBR7200-FAN=, MAS-UBR7223-FAN=
This document explains how to remove and replace the fan tray in the Cisco uBR7200 series universal broadband routers (which consist of the Cisco uBR7246 VXR, Cisco uBR7246, and the Cisco uBR7223). It includes instructions for removing the fan tray from the chassis and installing a new fan tray in the chassis.
This document includes the following sections:
The Cisco IOS software running on your router contains extensive features and functionality. The effective use of many of these features is easier if you have more information at hand. For additional information on configuring and maintaining a Cisco uBR7200 series router, the following documentation resources are available:
The Cisco uBR7246 VXR and Cisco uBR7246 fan tray, shown in Figure 1, consists of seven fans enclosed in a metal tray. The Cisco uBR7223, shown in Figure 2, consists of 4 fans enclosed in a metal tray.
The fan tray is located in the chassis on the left side of the Cisco uBR7200 series when viewing the routers from the front. (See Figure 1.) The fan tray receives DC-input power through a power connector that connects to the router midplane.

The fan tray draws cooling air in through the intake vent on the right side of the chassis (when viewing the router from the front [the port adapter and cable modem card end]), and moves the air across the internal components and out the exhaust vent on the left side of the chassis. Figure 3 shows the air flow through the Cisco uBR7200 series routers.

The right and left sides of the router must remain unobstructed to ensure adequate airflow and to prevent overheating inside the router. Maintain at least 3 inches of clearance on both sides of the router.
Following are safety guidelines that you should follow when working with any equipment that connects to electrical power or telephone wiring.

Follow these basic guidelines when working with any electrical equipment:
Removing and replacing the fan tray in a Cisco uBR7200 series router involves the following tasks:
These tasks are described in detail in the following subsections.
Step 1 Using a no. 2 Phillips screwdriver or your fingers, loosen the captive installation screw that secures the fan tray to the chassis. (For a Cisco uBR7246 VXR or Cisco uBR7246, see Figure 4. For a Cisco uBR7223, see Figure 5.)

Step 2 Grasp the fan tray handle (or handles) with one hand and the outside of the chassis with the other hand.
![]() | Caution The fans are exposed on the left side of the fan tray. Keep your fingers, clothing, and jewelry away from the fans. Always handle the fan tray by the handle (or handles). |
Step 3 Pull the fan tray backward toward you to disengage it from the power receptacle on the midplane. (For the Cisco uBR7246 VXR or Cisco uBR7246, see Figure 6. For the Cisco uBR7223, see Figure 7.)

This completes the steps for removing the fan tray from the chassis.
Proceed to the following section, "Installing a New Fan Tray in the Chassis."
Step 1 For a Cisco uBR7246 VXR or Cisco uBR7246, orient the fan tray so the fans face the outside of the chassis and the fan tray handle is at the top of the fan tray front panel. (See Figure 6.)
For a Cisco uBR7223, orient the fan try so the fans face the outside of the chassis and the captive installation screw is at the top of the fan tray front panel. (See Figure 5.)
Step 2 Guide the fan tray into the chassis making sure the DC-power connector on the fan tray is aligned with the receptacle on the midplane.
![]() | Caution The fans are exposed on the left side of the fan tray. Keep your fingers, clothing, and jewelry away from the fans. Always handle the fan tray by the handle. |
Step 3 Secure the fan tray to the chassis using the attached captive installation screw. (For the Cisco uBR7246, see Figure 4. For the Cisco uBR7223, see Figure 5.)
This completes the procedure for removing or replacing the fan tray in a Cisco uBR7200 series router.
