Preface

Preface

This Cisco uBR910 Series Cable Data Service Unit Hardware Installation Guide describes installing, powering on, and troubleshooting a Cisco uBR910 series cable data service unit (DSU). The document also includes cabling and pinout information.

This section contains:

Note The Cisco uBR910 series includes the Cisco uBR914 DSU.

Audience

This guide is intended for coaxial networking transmission installers and technicians who are familiar with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of cable television wiring and equipment. This guide is also directed to the network administrators who are responsible for administering the customer's local area network.

Cable system installers and technicians should be familiar with their cable plant's base operating parameters and subscriber service offerings. Cable system support engineers and administrators should be acquainted with cable data networks and WAN communications protocols. Network administrators should be familiar with the principles of IP routing and subnetting.

Note This document contains instructions to install or configure the Cisco uBR910 series DSU using procedures that only qualified personnel should perform. This document is not intended for subscribers. Refer to the "Related Documentation" section for the documentation that is available for subscribers.

Purpose

This guide covers the physical installation of the Cisco uBR910 series DSU. These procedures include site preparation, the physical placement of the Cisco uBR910 series in an appropriate location, the cabling required for the power, serial, and cable connections, and verification of the installation at the initial power-on.

These procedures do not require a connection to the console port, nor do they require access to the command-line interface (CLI). However, CLI access is typically required to configure the Cisco uBR910 series and to bring it to full operability. See the Cisco uBR910 Series Cable DSU Software Configuration Guide for instructions on configuring the Cisco uBR910 series for network operation; this guide also contains basic principles on configuring the access router that is servicing the customer's local area network.
