Ensure the data channel frequency has a sufficient RF signal level to meet your cable plant specifications and verify the RF input levels relative to a nearby analog video level:

  • Check the RF signal with an RF power meter at the Type F coax connector to verify the DOCSIS system signal.

  • Verify the nearby analog video signal is within the correct range---0 to +15 dBmV for most CATV systems.

Verifying Power Requirements

The Cisco uBR914 uses an internal AC-input power supply or the redundant power supply (RPS) option. The Power and Activity LEDs on the front panel indicate that the system is receiving power and is operational. The RPS LED on the front panel indicates that the optional RPS is connected and supplying power to the unit.

The power supply uses a power factor corrector that allows the Cisco uBR910 series DSU to operate in any country where the input voltage is between 100 and 240 VAC, and 50 or 60 Hz. Different power cords are available to suit the country of operation. Refer to Table A-1 for AC-input power supply specifications, including input voltage and operating frequency ranges.

Caution Do not connect the Cisco uBR910 series DSU to power at this point because the system will begin its initial power-on sequence and attempt to connect to the network. The unit should be powered on only after all other connections have been made, as described later in this chapter.

Cisco recommends that you follow these precautions:

Warning Never defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment in the absence of a suitably installed ground conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an electrician if you are uncertain that suitable grounding is available.

Note Adhere to the safety guidelines presented in the "Safety" section before following procedures in the remainder of this chapter. Be sure all equipment to be connected to the Cisco uBR910 series is powered off.

Connecting to the Cable System

To connect the Cisco uBR910 series DSU to the cable system:

Step 1 Verify that the unit is not connected to power.

Step 2 Locate the RF coaxial cable coming from the CATV wall outlet.

Step 3 Install a cable splitter/directional coupler if needed to separate signals for TV and computer usage. If necessary, also install a high-pass filter to prevent interference between the TV and computer signals.

Step 4 Connect the RF coaxial cable to the F-connector on the back panel. Hand-tighten the connector, making sure it is finger tight; then give it a 1/6 turn with a wrench. See Figure 3-9.

Figure 3-9: Connecting the CATV Coaxial Cable to the Cisco uBR910 Series

Caution Do not overtighten the connector. Overtightening can break off the connector. Using a torque wrench is not recommended because of the danger of tightening the connector more than the recommended 1/6 turn after it is finger tight.

Step 5 Make sure all other coaxial cable connectors---all intermediate splitters, couplers, or ground blocks---are securely tightened from the distribution tap to the Cisco uBR910 series, following instructions in step 4.

Note Loose connectors inside the building or residence can cause intermittent operation.

Caution To ensure compliance with FCC limits, connection to the cable system must be made with a high-quality, shielded cable. If the quality or general condition of the coaxial cable at the subscriber site is in question, Cisco recommends that you replace the coaxial cable. For more information on the effects of substandard cabling on the Cisco uBR910 series installation, see the "CATV Coaxial Cabling" section.

Connecting the Serial Cable to the Access Router

This section provides instructions on connecting the serial interfaces on the Cisco uBR910 series DSU and the access router. Before proceeding, be sure you have read the "Serial Interface Operations" section, and have chosen the proper interfaces and protocol for your installation.

Step 1 Verify that both the Cisco uBR910 series DSU and the access router are turned OFF. Power should not be supplied to either unit until after all cables have been connected.

Step 2 Obtain the serial cable required for your installation. See the "Serial Interface Connector and Cabling" section for information on how to select the proper cable(s).

Step 3 Connect the serial cable to the router interface module on the Cisco uBR910 series DSU.

Step 4 Connect the other end of the serial cable to the access router.

Step 5 If you used two cables for each of the two previous steps, connect the two cables together using their matching connectors.

Step 6 Secure all connectors using the screws provided on the cables.

Step 7 Verify the cabling between the units and that the cables have been secured as needed.

Proceed to the next section to connect power and complete the installation.

Connecting Power

This section describes how to connect the AC-input power supply to the Cisco uBR910 series.

Note If you purchased the redundant power supply (RPS) option, see the documentation that accompanied the RPS for instructions on installing the RPS adapter plate into the Cisco uBR914 and connecting it to the RPS.

To connect AC-input power to the Cisco uBR910 series DSU:

Step 1 Locate the power receptacle at the rear of the chassis. (See the "Verifying Power Requirements" section to verify that this power source is adequate.)

Step 2 For the Cisco uBR914, do one of the following:

Step 3 For the Cisco uBR914 DSU using the AC power supply, plug the power supply into a standard electrical power outlet at the site. If using the RPS option, connect the RPS adapter plate on the back panel of the Cisco uBR914 to a DC connector on the back panel of the RPS. Turn on the power switch on the rear panel of the Cisco uBR914 and then, if necessary, turn on the power switch on the RPS to apply power.

Step 4 Turn ON power for all other equipment, including the access router if necessary, and wait for the devices to complete their startup processes.

Caution To prevent electrical shock, do not disconnect the AC power supply cord from the power supply while the system is operating. The Cisco uBR914 can be turned off by flipping its power switch to the OFF position.

Warning Failure to properly ground the Cisco uBR914, either by circumventing the three-wire grounding-type plug or by using a power outlet that is improperly grounded, can create a potentially hazardous electrical situation.

Warning Never defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment in the absence of a suitably installed ground conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an electrician if you are uncertain that suitable grounding is available.

Power-On and Initialization Sequence

When the Cisco uBR910 series DSU is connected and powered on, it executes automatic self-diagnostic and installation procedures. The following procedure describes what you should see during this process.

Note For the Cisco uBR910 series to complete its power-on sequence, a number of tasks must be completed at the CMTS. See the "Initial Power-On and Provisioning" section for an overview of the initialization and provisioning processes.

While the Cisco uBR910 series DSU initializes:

Step 1 Watch the LEDs on the front panel. When the unit first powers on, all LEDs (except for the ACT LEDs) briefly light and then turn off. As self-test is executed, various LEDs light to reveal diagnostic progress and turn off when self-test is complete.

Step 2 The OK LED blinks as the system completes self-test and boots a Cisco IOS image. When this is finished, the OK LED lights again.

Step 3 During the system's initialization and download, the green OK and ACT LEDs blink. After completing the download procedure (which could take up to 10 minutes if downloading a new Cisco IOS image as well as a configuration file), the green OK LED remains on.

Step 4 Check that the DS, US, LINK, and DSNR LEDs remain on to indicate the Cisco uBR910 series is operational and receiving a healthy signal:

Step 5 Check that the ACT LEDs blink to indicate activity on the cable and serial interfaces.

Step 6 If all LEDs appear normal, configure the Cisco uBR910 series DSU and access router as needed so that traffic is routed between the serial interface and cable interface as desired. See the Cisco uBR910 Series Software Configuration Guide for more details.

Step 7 After verifying operations, acquaint the subscriber with the recommended ambient temperature requirements listed in "Technical Specifications." Remind the subscriber to keep the area around the chassis as free from dust as is practical and review general safety standards.

Step 8 Give the subscriber the Cisco-provided subscriber publications, along with any literature your company provides, including the instructions on how to contact your customer service department.
