This document describes how to install a router interface module in the Cisco uBR914 cable data service unit (DSU). The router interface module provides the serial connection to the access router that is acting as the gateway to the subscriber's local area network (LAN). The Cisco uBR914 DSU is shipped with a router interface module installed at the factory, but these instructions are necessary when you need to replace or upgrade the existing module.
You can install the router interface module in the Cisco uBR914 DSU without removing the chassis cover. Each chassis can accommodate one router interface module:

Caution The Cisco uBR914 DSU interface module has the same form factor as the WAN interface cards used in Cisco 2600 series and other Cisco routers, but the two types of modules are not interchangeable. Do not install any modules in the Cisco uBR914 DSU except the router interface module listed above. For a list of modules that are supported in other routers, see the documentation for those routers. |
Take the following steps to install a router interface module:
Step 2 Attach the ESD-preventive wrist strap to safely channel the ESD voltages to ground. Wrap the strap around your wrist, making sure that it makes good skin contact, and then connect the clip on the other end to an unpainted surface of the chassis frame or rack mount. (If a wrist strap is not available, ground yourself by touching the metal part of the chassis or rack mount.)
Step 3 Turn OFF power to the Cisco uBR914 DSU by switching its power switch to the OFF position---do not unplug the router's power supply because the power cord provides an electrical connection to earth ground.

Caution The router interface module is not hot-swappable (that is, you cannot remove or install it when the power to the router is ON). Be sure to turn OFF the power to the router before installing or removing WAN modules. Failure to do so may damage or halt the router. |
Step 4 Remove the serial cable attached to the connector on the router interface module.
Step 5 Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the captive screws on the currently installed router interface module. See Figure 1:

Step 6 Holding the module by the edges on either side of the front panel, pull the currently installed module out of the Cisco uBR914 DSU and place it aside.
Step 7 Remove the new router interface module from its ESD-protective shipping material.
Step 8 Slide the new module into the slot along the card guides until it is completely seated in the connector inside the chassis (see Figure 2). Then tighten the two captive screws on the module to secure it to the chassis.

Step 9 Connect the DCE end of the serial cable to the router interface module on the Cisco uBR914 DSU. If not already done, connect the DTE end of the cable to the WAN interface card on the access router connected to the site's LAN.
Step 10 Turn ON power to the Cisco uBR914 DSU.
This concludes the procedure to install a router interface module in the Cisco uBR914 DSU.
