About This Guide

About This Guide

This preface describes who should read the Hardware Installation Guide, how it is organized, and its document conventions.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web at http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com, or
http://www-europe.cisco.com.

Documentation Feedback

If you are reading Cisco product documentation on the World Wide Web, you can submit comments electronically:

    1. Click Feedback in the toolbar.

    2. Select Documentation.

    3. Complete the form, click Submit, and send it to Cisco Systems.

If you are reading printed documentation that contains a response card, you can complete the card and mail it to Cisco Systems.

We appreciate your comments.

Document Objectives

This publication describes specific procedures for preparing your site and network equipment for the initial installation of the Catalyst 8510 MSR and the LightStream 1010 ATM switch chassis and power supplies. All additions or upgrades to the switch hardware or software image (firmware) that you order from the factory are accompanied by documents that provide product-specific installation instructions and up-to-date product information.

Who Should Read This Guide

To use this publication, you should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and preferably have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.

How This Guide Is Organized

Chapter 1

Product Overview

Describes the physical properties of the switch and interfaces and provides a brief ATM overview as well as functional descriptions of the primary system features and chassis components.

Chapter 2

Installing the Chassis

Describes the procedures for rack-mounting, connecting the power cables, and powering up the switch at your site.

Appendix A

Maintaining the ATM Switch

Describes maintenance procedures, such as the replacement of components.

Appendix B

Chassis Specifications

Describes the switch chassis specifications.

Appendix C

Translated Safety Warnings

Repeats the warnings in this guide and translates them into different languages.

To see translated versions of the warning, refer to the appendix "Translated Safety Warnings."

Waarschuwing  Dit waarschuwingssymbool betekent gevaar.

Warnung  Dieses Warnsymbol bedeutet Gefahr.
