This chapter describes cabling and configuration procedures for the LightStream 1010 ATM switch 155-Mbps port adapter modules (PAMs). When your switch leaves the factory, it is configured as specified in your order and is ready for installation and startup. As your communication requirements change, you might want to upgrade your system, add components, or change the initial configuration.
The following 155-Mbps PAMs are described in this chapter:
Software and upgrades require specific document part numbers and other frequently updated information; therefore, only basic software configuration guidelines are included in this publication. Detailed, up-to-date instructions are included in the LightStream 1010 ATM Switch Software Configuration Guide. The 155-Mbps Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) STS3C/SDH STM1 PAM is used for intercampus or wide-area links (see Figure 3-1). The four ports on each PAM can be configured as redundant links using the switch routing protocols. The PAMs support SC-type and unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) connectors. Receive and transmit LEDs on each port give quick, visual indications of port status and operation. For network management support, statistics gathering and alarm monitoring capabilities are provided, building on the manageability mechanisms of SONET/SDH.
Each port on the PAM can be configured to support the following clocking options:
Traffic pacing allows the aggregate output traffic rate on any port to be set to a rate below the line rate. This feature is useful when communicating with a slow receiver or when connected to public networks with peak-rate tariffs.
The LightStream 1010 switch powers up automatically. All configuration information for PAMs is saved between hot swaps and switch reboots, while interface types are discovered automatically by the switch. This eliminates mandatory manual configuration.
The LightStream 1010 supports any PAM combination. You can configure your switch with only the number and type of interfaces required, with up to 32 155-Mbps
interface ports.
The 155-Mbps SONET STS3C/SDH STM1 PAM has four ports. Figure 3-2 shows an example of the 155-Mbps PAM applications.

The 155-Mbps PAMs provide the following ATM connections:
All ATM interfaces are full duplex. You must use the appropriate ATM interface cable to connect the ATM single-mode, multimode, or UTP PAM interface with an external ATM network.
This section describes the ATM connectors and the 155-Mbps PAM network connections and LEDs.
For fiber-optic traffic over single-mode or multimode, use the SC-type connector to connect the 155-Mbps multimode PAM, 155-Mbps single-mode PAM, or mixed single-mode and multimode PAM to the external ATM switch. See the section "ATM Connection Equipment" in the chapter "Installing the LightStream 1010 ATM Switch PAMs" for a description of an SC-type connector.
For UTP traffic, use the RJ-45 connector (see Figure 3-3) to connect the 155-Mbps UTP PAM to the external ATM switch. See the section "ATM Connection Equipment" in the chapter "Installing the LightStream 1010 ATM Switch PAMs" for a description of an RJ-45 connector.
The 155-Mbps PAM provides an interface to ATM switching fabrics for transmitting and receiving data at up to 155 Mbps bidirectionally. The LEDs provide status information for the individual interface connections.
The ATM PAMs can support interfaces that connect to the following physical layers:
Connect the ATM interface cables as shown in Figure 3-3. For descriptions of ATM cabling requirements, refer to the sections "ATM Connection Equipment" in the chapter "Installing the LightStream 1010 ATM Switch PAMs."

The LEDs provide status information for the individual 155-Mbps single-mode and multimode fiber-optic and UTP interface connections. The LEDs are described in Table 3-1 and shown in Figure 3-3 and Figure 3-4.

When the switch is powered on without any previous configuration data, the ATM interfaces are automatically configured on the physical ports. Interim Local Management Interface (ILMI) and the physical card type are used to automatically derive the ATM interface type, User-Network Interface (UNI) version, and maximum VPI and VCI bits, ATM interface side, and ATM UNI type.
When you hot swap a carrier module (CM) or PAM, the configuration for the initially installed PAM interface configuration is saved. If the same type of PAM is reinstalled, no additional configuration is needed and the initial configuration is reestablished.

If ILMI is disabled or if the connecting end node is not supporting ILMI, the following defaults are assigned to all 155-Mbps interfaces:
