About This Guide

About This Guide

This preface describes who should read the LightStream  1010 ATM Switch Hardware Installation Guide, how it is organized, and its document conventions.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web at http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com, or
http://www-europe.cisco.com.

If you are reading Cisco product documentation on the World Wide Web, you can submit comments electronically. Click Feedback in the toolbar, select Documentation, and click Enter the feedback form. After you complete the form, click Submit to send it to Cisco. We appreciate your comments.

Document Objectives

This publication describes specific procedures for preparing your site and network equipment for the initial installation of the LightStream  1010 Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switch chassis, power supplies, and for the startup of your new switch. All additions or upgrades to the switch hardware or software image (firmware) that you order from the factory are accompanied by documents that provide product-specific installation instructions and up-to-date product information.

Who Should Read This Guide

Setting up and maintaining a network requires the knowledge and expertise of people who have a variety of skills. In many cases, the people responsible for installing and maintaining hardware and wiring are not the people who configure the software and administer the network. This publication provides information specific to initial installation and configuration of the switch hardware. To use this publication, you should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and preferably have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.

Conventions

Command descriptions use the following conventions:

boldface font

Commands and keywords are in boldface.

italic font

Arguments for which you supply values are in italics.

[      ]

Elements in square brackets are optional.

{ x | y | z }

Alternative keywords are grouped in braces and separated by vertical bars.

[ x | y | z ]

Optional alternative keywords are grouped in brackets and separated by vertical bars.

string

A nonquoted set of characters. Do not use quotation marks around the string or the string will include the quotation marks.

Examples that contain system prompts denote interactive sessions, indicating the commands you should enter at the prompt. The system prompt indicates the current level of the EXEC command interpreter. For example, the prompt "Switch>" indicates that you are at the user level, and the prompt "Switch(config)#" indicates that you are at the configuration level. Access to the privileged level usually requires a password. Refer to the related software configuration and reference publications for additional information.

Screen examples use the following conventions:

screen font

Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in screen font.

boldface screen font

Information you must enter is in boldface screen font.

italic screen font

Arguments for which you supply values are in italic screen font.

^

The symbol ^ represents the key labeled Control---for example, the key combination ^D in a screen display means hold down the Control key while you press the D key.

<      >

Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are in angle brackets.

[      ]

Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets.

!, #

An exclamation point (!) or a pound sign (#) at the beginning of a line of code indicates a comment line.

Notes use the following conventions:

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to material not covered in the publication.

Cautions use the following conventions:

Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.

Warnings use the following conventions:

Warning This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, you must be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents. To see translated versions of the warning, refer to the appendix "Translated Safety Warnings."

Waarschuwing    Dit waarschuwingssymbool betekent gevaar.

Warnung    Dieses Warnsymbol bedeutet Gefahr.
