EMI Compliance for Port Adapters Installed in the Catalyst 8540 MSR

EMI Compliance for Port Adapters Installed in the Catalyst 8540 MSR

This document describes how to ensure electromagnetic interference (EMI) compliance for port adapters before installation in the Catalyst 8540 MSR. This document includes the following sections:

EMI Shielding and EMI Compliance

The Catalyst 8540 MSR port adapters must have EMI strips to ensure compliance with emission standards.

Figure 1 shows a port adapter equipped with an EMI strip on the top edge of the metal faceplate. EMI strips are located on the top and bottom edges of the metal faceplate.

Figure 1: Port Adapter Shielded with EMI Strips

LightStream 1010 ATM switch port adapters shipped prior to January 1, 1999 are equipped with EMI clips. Figure 2 shows a port adapter with EMI clips located on the top edge of the metal faceplate.

Figure 2: Port Adapter Shielded with EMI Clips

The Catalyst 8540 MSR supports port adapters used in the LightStream 1010 chassis. However, you must replace the EMI clips on the LightStream 1010 port adapters with EMI strips (see Figure 1) to meet EMI compliance in the Catalyst 8540 MSR. Port adapters with EMI clips do not comply with EMI standards listed in Table 1 when installed in the Catalyst 8540 MSR.

EMI Compliance Standards

Note Port adapters equipped with EMI clips are EMI compliant for the LightStream 1010 ATM switch. EMI clips on the port adapters must be replaced with EMI strips to meet EMI compliance for the Catalyst 8540 MSR. LightStream 1010 ATM switch port adapters shipped after
January 1, 1999 have preinstalled EMI strips. These port adapters meet EMI compliance standards for Catalyst 8540 MSR, Catalyst 8510 MSR, and LightStream 1010.

Removing EMI Clips

You need the following equipment to remove EMI clips and replace them with EMI strips:

Note The accessory kit shipped with the Catalyst 8540 MSR contains two EMI strips for application on one port adapter. You can order additional EMI strips using order number C85MS-PAM-EMI-KIT=.
Warning
During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself.

Take the following steps to remove the EMI clips from the port adapter:

Step 1 Wear the grounding wrist strap to prevent ESD damage. Ensure that the grounding wrist strap makes good skin contact.

Step 2 Place the port adapter component side up on an antistatic mat.

Step 3 Use needle-nose pliers to remove all the EMI clips. (See Figure 3.)

Step 4 Turn the port adapter over so that the component side is facing down.

Step 5 Repeat Step 3.

Step 6 Dispose of the EMI clips.

Applying EMI Strips

Take the following steps to apply the EMI strips to the port adapter:

Step 1 Place the port adapter on an antistatic mat with the component side facing down.

Step 2 Remove the adhesive strip on the back of the EMI strip.

Step 3 Place the EMI strip on the metal edge of the faceplate. The EMI strip covers the same area where the EMI clips were previously located. (See Figure 4.)

Step 4 Press the EMI strip down on the metal faceplate.

Step 5 Turn the port adapter component side up.

Step 6 Repeat Steps 2 to 4.

Figure 4: Applying EMI Strips

This completes the procedure for replacing EMI clips with EMI strips on a port adapter. Port adapters shielded with EMI strips are EMI compliant and are ready for installation in the Catalyst 8540 MSR. For instructions on how to install port adapters in the Catalyst 8540 chassis, refer to the chapter "Installing ATM Port Adapters" in the ATM Port Adapter Installation Guide.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
