Release Notes for Channelized DS3 Frame Relay Port Adapter Functional Image Release 4.2

Release Notes for Channelized DS3 Frame Relay Port Adapter Functional Image Release 4.2

July 13, 2000

Channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter functional image name fi-c8510-1t3fr.A.4-2

Text Product Number OL-0229-02 A0

This document describes the features and caveats for Cisco functional image, fi-c8510-1t3fr.A.4-2, for the 1CT3 channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter used with the Catalyst 8540 MSR, Catalyst 8510 MSR, and LightStream 1010 ATM switch routers.

This version of the channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter functional image fixes the caveats listed in the section "Caveat Symptoms and Workarounds" later in this release note.

Contents

This release note includes the following sections:

Introduction

The Catalyst 8540 MSR, Catalyst 8510 MSR, and LightStream 1010 ATM switch routers provide switched ATM connections to individual workstations, servers, LAN segments, or other ATM switches and routers using fiber-optic, unshielded twisted-pair (UTP), and coaxial cable.

The channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter facilitates interworking between a Frame Relay network, an ATM network, and network users. Existing Frame Relay users can also migrate to higher bandwidth ATM using channelized Frame Relay port adapters. Additionally, these port adapters extend the ATM network across a wide area over a frame-based serial line or intervening Frame Relay WAN.

Determining Your Channelized DS3 Frame Relay Port Adapter Functional Image Release

This section describes the process you use to determine the existing functional image version installed on your channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter.

To display the functional image version in a channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter, use the following command in privileged EXEC mode:

Command
Purpose

show functional-image-info subslot slot/subslot

Displays the functional image information.

Example

The following example shows the firmware functional image information for the channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter in slot 4, subslot 0:

Note   In the previous show function-image-info command output, the functional version appeared as 4.2 corresponding to the 4-2 string in the file name "fi-c8510-1t3fr.A.4-2."

Updating to a New Release

For detailed functional image upgrade instructions, see the "Maintaining Functional Images" section in the "Managing Configuration Files, System Images, and Functional Images" chapter of the ATM Switch Router Software Configuration Guide.

Caution Functional image download cannot revert once the download is started. Do not interrupt the download procedure. Wait until it has finished before attempting any commands on the switch router. Confirm that the download is done in binary mode and check file sizes before and after download. A failure during reprogramming can result in the card being unusable.

Caveats

This section contains a listing of the caveats for this channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter firmware functional image.

Use Table 1 to determine the status of a particular caveat and its relevancy to your firmware functional image release. These caveats are described in detail in the following section, "Caveat Symptoms and Workarounds." In the table, "Y" indicates a fixed caveat, "N" indicates an open caveat, and .

Caveat Symptoms and Workarounds

This section describes the resolved caveats for this channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter firmware functional image:

Symptom: When a route processor switchover occurs on a Catalyst 8540 MSR, the channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter resets to synchronize the IOS configuration with firmware configuration.
  Workaround: None.
Symptom: When Frame Relay interfaces have LMI enabled and the timeout and retry values are set to the defaults, the peer interface experiences LMI timeouts during a Catalyst 8540 MSR route processor switchover. The switchover takes about 1 minute.
During the switchover, the serial interfaces cannot respond to LMI requests from their peers. Because of the time it takes for a switchover to complete, the peer interfaces timeout and the interfaces go down until they receive LMI responses again. Also, the PVC becomes inactive on the peer interfaces.
Workaround: Increase the configured values for lmi-n392dce, lmi-n392dte, lmi-t392dce and lmi-n391dte on the Frame Relay interfaces to prevent LMI from bringing down the interfaces when no LMI activity occurs for about 1 minute.
Symptom: Frames are discarded because of CRC errors when sending traffic on Frame Relay PVCs. When configuring a Frame Relay network internetworking or service internetworking PVC, a small number of discarded frames are sometimes seen because of CRC errors. These discarded frames occur even without transmitting traffic.
Workaround: Avoid sending traffic on the PVCs while they are still being configured on the interface.
Symptom: In a LightStream 1010 ATM switch with 32MB RAM, interprocess communication (IPC) between the channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter driver and channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter firmware might experience a transient failure when the firmware crashes under heavy traffic conditions. To recover from this transient failure, reset the channelized DS3 Frame Relay port adapter after waiting about 2 minutes.
This IPC failure does not occur on LightStream 1010 ATM switches with 64 MB RAM.
  Workaround: None.

Service and Support

For service and support for a product purchased from a reseller, contact the reseller. Resellers offer a wide variety of Cisco service and support programs, which are described in the section "Service and Support" in the information packet that shipped with your product.

Note   If you purchased your product from a reseller, you can access CCO as a guest. CCO is Cisco Systems' primary real-time support channel. Your reseller offers programs that include direct access to CCO services.

For service and support for a product purchased directly from Cisco, use CCO.
