Release Notes for T1 and E1 IMA Port Adapter Functional Image Release 3.2

Release Notes for T1 and E1 IMA Port Adapter Functional Image Release 3.2

May 15, 2000

T1 and E1 IMA Port Adapter functional image name fi-c8510-8t1e1-ima.A.3-2

Text Part Number: OL-0355-01 Rev. A0

This document describes the features and caveats for Cisco functional image fi-c8510-8t1e1-ima.A.3-2, for the T1 and E1 IMA port adapters used with the Catalyst 8540 MSR, Catalyst 8510 MSR and LightStream 1010 ATM switch routers.

This version of the T1 and E1 IMA port adapter functional image fixes the caveat listed in the section "Caveat Symptoms and Workarounds" later in this release note.

Contents

This release note includes the following sections:

Introduction

The Catalyst 8540 MSR, Catalyst 8510 MSR and LightStream 1010 ATM switch routers provide switched ATM connections to individual workstations, servers, LAN segments, or other ATM switches and routers using fiber-optic, unshielded twisted-pair (UTP), and coaxial cable.

The T1 and E1 inverse multiplexing over ATM (IMA) port adapters use IMA technology to aggregate multiple low-speed links into one larger virtual trunk or IMA group. An inverse multiplexer appears to your ATM switch router as one logical pipe. IMA provides you with modular bandwidth to access the ATM network between T1 or E1 and T3 or E3 rates.

Determining Your T1 and E1 IMA Port Adapter Functional Image Release

This section describes the process you use to determine the existing functional image version installed on your T1 and E1 IMA port adapter.

To display the functional image version in a T1 and E1 IMA port adapter, use the following command in privileged EXEC mode:

Command
Purpose

show functional-image-info subslot slot/subslot

Displays the functional image information.

Example

The following example shows the firmware functional image information for the T1 and E1 IMA port adapter in subslot 0/1:

Note    In the previous show function-image-info command output, the functional version appeared as 3.2 corresponding to the 3-2 string in the file name "fi-c8510-8t1e1-ima.A.3-2."

Updating to a New Release

For detailed functional image upgrade instructions, see the "Maintaining Functional Images" section in the "Managing Configuration Files, System Images, and Functional Images" chapter of the ATM Switch Router Software Configuration Guide.

Caution Functional image download cannot be reverted back once the download is started. Do not interrupt the download procedure. Wait until it has finished before attempting any commands on the switch router. Confirm that the download is done in binary mode and check file sizes before and after download. A failure during reprogramming can result in the card being unusable.

Caveats

This section contains a listing of the caveats for this T1 and E1 IMA port adapter firmware functional image.

Use Table 1 to determine the status of a particular caveat and its relevancy to your firmware functional image release. These caveats are described in detail in the following section, "Caveat Symptoms and Workarounds." In the table, "Y" indicates a fixed caveat, and "N" indicates an open caveat.

Caveat Symptoms and Workarounds

This section describes the resolved caveat for this T1 and E1 IMA port adapter firmware functional image:

Symptom: The ima_failure_trap is not generated when the groups are deleted.
Workaround: Use the show controller command to display the line code violations on the line. Clear the counter with the shutdown/no shutdown command sequence on the interface will clear the counter.
Symptom: The ATM interface comes up with different linecodes after the switch processor (SP) switch overs.
  Workaround: None.
Symptom: The IMA group fails to come up.
Workaround: Use the following command on one of the IMA interfaces:

   Switch(config-if)#fwmon "altrap 00 ff 00 ff 00 ff"

If the group continues in the down condition, use the show controller command and look for the persistent phy alarms on the lines.
Symptom: Diagnostics tests 05 and 06 fail without corresponding hardware problems.

Note   Upgrade the carrier module FPGA image to version 1.8.

  Workaround: None.
Symptom: ATM link comes up with different linecodes at both ends.
Workaround: Use the show controller command to display the line code violations on the line. Clear the counter with the shutdown/no shutdown command sequence on the interface will clear the counter.

Service and Support

For service and support for a product purchased from a reseller, contact the reseller. Resellers offer a wide variety of Cisco service and support programs, which are described in the section "Service and Support" in the information packet that shipped with your product.

Note   If you purchased your product from a reseller, you can access CCO as a guest. CCO is Cisco Systems' primary real-time support channel. Your reseller offers programs that include direct access to CCO services.

For service and support for a product purchased directly from Cisco, use CCO.
