Release Notes for Catalyst 8540 MSR Feature Card FPGA Image Release 4.17

June 14, 1999

Catalyst 8540 MSR feature card (product number C8546MSR-MSP-FCL) FPGA image name fi-c8540-fc.A.4-17

This document describes the features and caveats for Cisco field-programmable gate array (FPGA) functional image, fi-c8540-fc.A.4-17, for the feature cards used with the Catalyst 8540 MSR.

This version of feature card FPGA image fixes the per-VC transmit statistics counter problem listed in the section "Caveats" later in this release note.

Contents

This release note includes the following sections:

Introduction

The Catalyst 8540 MSR provide switched ATM connections to individual workstations, servers, LAN segments, or other ATM switches and routers using fiber-optic, unshielded twisted-pair (UTP), and coaxial cable.

Slots 5, 6, and 7 of the Catalyst 8540 MSR chassis are occupied by either two or three switch processors, for a 20-Gbps non-EHSA or 20-Gbps Enhanced High System Availability (EHSA) switch fabric. The switch processors also accommodate the optional switch processor feature card. The switch feature card supports usage parameter control (UPC) and statistics.

Determining Your Feature Card FPGA Image Release

This section describes the process you use to determine the existing FPGA functional image version installed on your feature card.

To display the functional image version in a feature card, use the following command in privileged EXEC mode:
Command Purpose

show functional-image-info [slot number | subslot slot/subslot]

Displays the functional image information.

Example

The following example shows the FPGA functional image information for the feature card in slot 5:

Note  In the previous show function-image-info command the functional version appeared as 4.17 corresponding to the 4-17 string in the file name "fi-c8540-fc.A.4-17."

Updating to a New Release

For detailed FPGA image upgrade instructions, see the "Maintaining Functional Images" section in the "Managing Configuration Files, System Images, and Functional Images" chapter of the ATM Switch Router Software Configuration Guide.

Caution FPGA image download can not be reverted back once the download is started. Do not interrupt the download procedure. Wait until it has finished before attempting any commands on the switch. Confirm that the download is done in binary mode and check file sizes before and after download. A failure during reprogramming can result in the card being unusable.

Caveats

This section contains listings of the caveats for this feature card FPGA functional image.

Use the table to determine if a particular caveat applies to your FPGA functional image release, or if a particular caveat was corrected in your FPGA or firmware image release. These caveats are described in detail in the following section "Resolved Caveats."

Table 1 lists the known caveats and corrected caveats for this feature card FPGA image.

Resolved Caveats

This section describes the resolved caveats for this feature card FPGA functional image:

Some transmit per-VC counters on both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections miscount cells. The cells are transmitted but not counted. The number of missed cells is small relative to the total number of cells counted and is approximately 1 percent in the worst case.
Workaround: Upgrade feature card FPGA image to fi-c8540-fc.A.4-17.

Service and Support

For service and support for a product purchased from a reseller, contact the reseller. Resellers offer a wide variety of Cisco service and support programs, which are described in the section "Service and Support" in the information packet that shipped with your product.

Note If you purchased your product from a reseller, you can access CCO as a guest. CCO is Cisco Systems' primary real-time support channel. Your reseller offers programs that include direct access to CCO services.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.

You can access CCO in the following ways:

Documentation CD-ROM

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more current than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription.
