Installing the VPN 5000 Client

This chapter describes how to install the VPN 5000 Client on your computer. Included are instructions for the following platforms:

Windows® 95/98
Windows NT® 4.0 (Service Pack 3, or later)
Mac OS 7.6, or later

For administrators who want to customize the VPN 5000 Client before installation, see "Network Administrator's Guide."

Inst alling the Client for Windows 95/98

This section describes the installation process for the Windows Client.

System Requirements

The Windows 95/98 VPN 5000 Client runs on any computer with a Pentium® 90 or faster processor.

Installing the Software

To install the Windows 95/98 Client:

Step 1 Double-click the vpn-5000-win-95-98-x.xx file, where x.xx is the version number.

Step 2 Follow the instructions on your screen.

The setup program transfers all necessary files to the destination volume of your choice.

Install ing the Client for Windows NT

This section describes the installation process for the Windows NT VPN 5000 Client.

System Requirements

The Windows NT VPN 5000 Client requires Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 installed, and a Pentium® 90 or faster processor.

Cisco recommends that you install Windows NT Service Pack 3 or later, even if it is already on your system. Other network-related installations might have overwritten older versions of files contained in the Service Pack.

Installing the Software

To install the Windows NT Client:

Step 1 Copy the Client file and the associated release notes to a temporary folder on your hard drive, for example, C:\temp.

Step 2 Double-click the vpn-5000-win-nt-x.xx file, where x.xx is the version number.

The setup program transfers all necessary files to the destination volume of your choice and launches a program that automatically installs the appropriate network driver.

Step 3 Wait until you are prompted before you restart your computer.

If the program is unsuccessful, you can manually install the network driver. See the "Manually Installing the Windows NT Network Driver" section, for more information.

Instal ling the Client for Mac OS

This section describes the installation process for the Mac OS VPN 5000 Client.

System Requirements

The Mac OS VPN 5000 Client runs on any Power Macintosh® or compatible computer with Mac OS 7.6 or later, and Open Transport 1.1.1, or later.

You also need an application that can translate a binhex (.hqx) archive, such as Stuffit.

Installing the Software

To install the Mac OS Client:

Step 1 Translate the vpn-5000-mac-x.xx.sea.hqx file from binhex using an application such as Binhex or Stuffit.

Step 2 If your binhex application did not expand the vpn-client-mac-x.xx.sea.hqx file, double-click it to uncompress the installer.

Step 3 Double-click the VPN 5000 Client Install file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the client.

Step 4 Click Restart.

After your computer completes the restart process, you can run the client program.
