This chapter describes the Cisco VPN 5008 concentrator hardware features and specifications.
Table 3-1 lists the basic features of the VPN 5008 concentrator.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
8 slots for modules | Combine hot-swappable modules in the chassis for multiple physical connections and cumulative bandwidth and processor power. The concentrator pools module processing even if you are not using the physical interface. See the Cisco VPN 5002 and 5008 Module Hardware Guide for more information about each module. |
Control, storage, and processing by module in slot 0 | The module in the far left slot (slot 0) provides console port access for the entire chassis and modules, Flash memory storage for the software, and, like all other modules, powerful processors for all of the platform functions. |
Dual redundant AC power supplies | Hot-swappable supplies that can be set to 115 VAC or 230 VAC. |
Optional -48 VDC power supplies | Hot-swappable supplies that include alarm connectors for an external alarm device. |
Table 3-2 lists the hardware and environmental specifications of the VPN 5008 chassis.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
Dimensions |
|

Operating temperature | 32° F to 113° F (0° C to 45° C) |
Humidity | Up to 95% relative humidity (non-condensing) at 104° F (40° C) |
Figure 3-1 shows the slot numbering for the VPN 5008 chassis.

Figure 3-2 and Table 3-3 describe the AC power supply components for the VPN 5008 concentrator.

Warning This unit might have more than one power supply connection. All connections need to be removed to de-energize the unit. |
Figure 3-3 and Table 3-4 describe the DC power supply components for the VPN 5008 concentrator.

| Component or Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
Alarm Cutoff button | Resets the alarm after an alarm occurs. |
Alarm connectors | Three connectors serving both power supplies. Each connector sends alarms for one of the following severities:
See the label next to the connector for its severity. |
DC Power LED | Green when DC power is present. |
Fan LED | Green when the fan is operating. |
Power LED | Green when power is on. |
Power connectors | One for each power supply. |
Maximum power consumption | 500 Watts |
Power range | 36 to 60 VDC |
25 to 12.5A |
The supplied DB-25 male to DB-25 female straight-through cable follows the standard RS-232C pinouts. See the "Connecting the Console Cable" section for more information about using the console cable. To create your own cable, use the pinouts in Table 3-5.
| Pin | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
2 | TD | Transmit Data |
3 | RD | Receive Data |
4 | RTS | Request to Send |
5 | CTS | Clear to Send |
6 | DSR | Data Set Ready |
8 | DCD | Data Carrier Detect |
20 | DTR | Data Terminal Ready |
7 | SG | Signal Ground |
22 | RI | Ring Indicator |
