This chapter describes how to install the Cisco VPN 5008 chassis, including information about:
The VPN 5008 concentrator provides a network service provider (NSP) or enterprise customer with managed virtual private networks (VPNs) for one or more corporate sites.
See the Cisco VPN 5002 and 5008 Software Configuration Guide for more information about using the VPN 5008 concentrator in your network.
Your package contains the following items:
To prepare to install the VPN 5008 chassis, consider the following items:
![]() |
Warning To prevent the VPN 5000 concentrator from overheating, do not operate it in an area that exceeds the maximum recommended ambient temperature of 104°F (40°C). To prevent airflow restriction, allow at least 6 inches (15.2 cm) of clearance around the ventilation openings. |
![]() |
Warning The VPN 5000 concentrator must be installed into a rack that is secured to the building structure. |
![]() |
Warning This unit is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area can only be entered by service personnel through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location. |
![]() |
Warning To prevent bodily injury when you mount or service this unit in a rack, you must take special precautions to ensure that the system remains stable. The following guidelines are provided to ensure your safety: |
To ensure your safety and minimize potential damage to equipment, follow these guidelines before you attempt to move or work on the VPN 5008 chassis.
![]() |
Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity. |
![]() |
Warning To prevent personal injury or damage to the chassis, never attempt to lift or tilt the chassis using the handles on modules (such as power supplies, fans, or cards); these types of handles are not designed to support the weight of the unit. Lift the unit only by using handles that are an integral part of the chassis, or by grasping the chassis underneath its lower edge. |
![]() |
Warning Before you work on a chassis or work near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units; disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units. |
![]() |
Warning Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all national laws and regulations. |
![]() |
Warning Before you work on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals. |
![]() |
Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment. |
![]() |
Warning A voltage mismatch can cause equipment damage and may pose a fire hazard. If the voltage indicated on the label is different from the power outlet voltage, do not connect the chassis to that receptacle. |
Install the chassis brackets and handles on the VPN 5008 chassis even if you do not plan to mount it in a rack. Do not install the handles for a Telco rack, which does not provide enough finger room to use them.
You need a Phillips-head screwdriver to complete the following procedure.
Use the front holes for a standard rack or table, and the middle holes for a Telco rack (Figure 1-1).

Step 2 For a standard rack or table only, use two provided screws on each side to fasten the handles and spacers to the center of the chassis brackets (Figure 1-2).

After you attach the brackets, use two people to move the chassis to a table or platform by holding the front and side handles as shown in Figure 1-3.

Warning Two people are required to lift the chassis. To prevent injury, keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back. |

You can mount the VPN 5008 chassis in a standard 19-inch equipment rack or in a Telco rack. You need to provide:
Before you mount the chassis, consider the following rack guidelines:
This section describes how to attach the provided rack-mount brackets to the rack. The left bracket features a fold-down shelf that maintains the proper alignment of the brackets in the rack, but does not bear the weight of the chassis. The ledges at the bottom of the brackets bear the weight of the chassis until it is securely attached to the equipment rack.

Step 2 Hand-tighten the left bracket to the rack using your own screws or clips so that the bracket is even with the right bracket (Figure 1-5).

Step 3 Lower the shelf onto the tabs protruding from the right bracket.
Step 4 Adjust the bottom of the brackets as shown in Figure 1-6 so that the thumbscrews line up with the tabs on the right bracket.

Step 5 Tighten the thumbscrews to secure the shelf to the right bracket.
Step 6 Adjust the top of the brackets so the brackets are straight up and down, and tighten all mounting screws using a screwdriver.
After you attach the brackets, complete the following steps to install the chassis in a rack.

Warning Two people are required to lift the chassis. To prevent injury, keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back. |

Step 2 Slide the chassis into the rack until the chassis brackets are flush with the sides of the rack (Figure 1-9).

Step 3 Using your own screws or clips, secure the chassis brackets to the rack using at least two screws at the top and two screws at the bottom of each bracket (Figure 1-10).

The chassis ships with the modules you ordered pre-installed. If you want to add or remove a module, you must first disconnect the device. Be sure to keep a cover plate over any empty slots to maintain proper air ventilation and minimize dust accumulation.
To remove and add a module, you need a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Warning Blank faceplates (filler panels) serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they contain electromagnetic interference (EMI) that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not operate the system unless all cards and faceplates are in place. |

Warning An uncovered slot is a high energy hazard. Do not place your hand or any object other than a module into a slot. Contact with any interior part could lead to a dangerous shock of electricity. |
Step 2 Loosen the captive thumbscrews on both ends of the module or cover plate you want to remove.
Step 3 Grasping only the handles on both ends of the module or cover plate, slide it out of its slot (Figure 1-11).

Step 4 Place the module in a rack, a grounded antistatic surface, or other safe place.
Step 5 To add a module to an empty slot, grasp only the handles of the module, and slide it along the guides into the slot.
Step 6 Securely tighten the thumbscrews with the screwdriver.
To set initial parameters for the system and all modules, connect the provided console cable to the console port on the module in the far left slot, slot 0. While each module includes a console port, only the port in slot 0 controls the entire system.
