Maintenance

Maintenance

This chapter describes how to replace the air filter and power supply.

Warning Before you work on a chassis or work near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units; disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units.

Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.

Replacing the Air Filter

Under normal operation, you do not need to replace the air filter. Replace the filter only if an excessive amount of dirt and dust collects over an extended period of time, or if a module has a lit Over Temp LED. See the Cisco VPN 5002 and 5008 Module Hardware Guide for more information about resolving a high temperature condition.

Cisco Systems provides an extra filter with each unit to minimize the platform down time.

Complete these steps to change the filter.

Step 1   Remove the filter cover plate by loosening the two captive thumbscrews (
Figure 4-1).

Figure 4-1: Removing the Filter Cover Plate

Step 2   Remove the filter from its slot.

Step 3   Put the supplied replacement filter in the slot.

Step 4   Replace the filter cover plate and securely tighten the captive thumbscrews.

Step 5   Wash the old filter in warm, soapy water and allow to completely dry.

You can reuse the old filter the next time you change the filter. If either of the supplied filters is worn out or cannot be thoroughly cleaned, you can order a replacement filter from Cisco Systems.

Replacing a Power Supply

If the power supply fails, you can hot swap it with a new power supply. To determine if the power supply failed, look for the following indicators:

Warning Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply even when the power switch is off and the power cord is connected. For systems without a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply when the power cord is connected.

Removing the AC Power Supply

You need a medium Phillips screwdriver for the following procedure.

Step 1   Unscrew and remove the two screws holding the supply in place (Figure 4-2).

Figure 4-2: Remove Power Supply Screws

Step 2   Grab the handle and pull the power supply out of its receptacle (Figure 4-3).

Step 3   Insert the new power supply so it is flush with the faceplate and replace the screws.

Removing the DC Power Supply

Warning Before you perform any of the following procedures, ensure that power is removed from the DC circuit. To ensure that all power is off, locate the circuit breaker on the panel board that services the DC circuit, switch the circuit breaker to the Off position, and tape the switch handle of the circuit breaker in the Off position.

Step 1   Loosen the two thumbscrews holding the supply in place (Figure 4-4).

Step 2   Grasp the handle and pull the power supply out of its receptacle (Figure 4-5).

Step 3   Insert the new power supply so it is flush with the faceplate and tighten the thumbscrews.
