Installing the Chassis

This chapter describes how to install the VPN 5002 chassis, including information about:

Introduction

The VPN 5002 concentrator provides a network service provider (NSP) or enterprise customer with managed virtual private networks (VPNs) for one or more corporate sites.

See the Cisco VPN 5002 and 5008 Software Configuration Guide for more information about using the VPN 5002 concentrator in your network.

Package Contents

Your package contains the following items:

Placement Considerations

Consider the following items when preparing to install the VPN 5002 chassis:

Warning To prevent any VPN 5000 concentrator from overheating, do not operate it in an area that exceeds the maximum recommended ambient temperature of 104°F (40°C). To prevent airflow restriction, allow at least 6 inches (15.2 cm) of clearance around the ventilation openings.

Warning The VPN 5000 concentrator must be installed into a rack that is secured to the building structure.

Warning This unit is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area is where access can only be gained by service personnel through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.

Safety Guidelines

To ensure your safety and minimize potential damage to equipment, follow these guidelines before attempting to move or work on the VPN 5002 chassis.

Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.

Warning To prevent personal injury or damage to the chassis, never attempt to lift or tilt the chassis using the handles on modules (such as power supplies, fans, or cards); these types of handles are not designed to support the weight of the unit. Lift the unit only by using handles that are an integral part of the chassis, or by grasping the chassis underneath its lower edge.

Warning Before working on a chassis or working near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units; disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units.

Warning Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all national laws and regulations.

Warning Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.

Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.

Warning A voltage mismatch can cause equipment damage and may pose a fire hazard. If the voltage indicated on the label is different from the power outlet voltage, do not connect the chassis to that receptacle.

Rack-Mounting the Chassis

The following sections describe how to mount the VPN 5002 chassis in these rack types:

Mounting in a Standard Rack

The chassis requires 4 rack units (6.5 vertical inches) of rack space. You need to provide:

Complete the following steps to attach the provided brackets and handles to the chassis, and to mount the chassis in the rack.

Step 1   Remove the front three pan-head screws from each side of the chassis.

Figure 1-3: Remove Screws from Chassis

Step 2   On each side of the chassis, attach the bracket with three provided black 10-32 flat-head screws.

Figure 1-4: Attach Brackets to Chassis

Step 3   On each bracket, attach a handle and spacer with two provided 10-32 undercut flat-head screws.

Step 4   Move the chassis into the rack and attach the brackets to the rack using your screws.

Mounting in a Standard Rack for Earthquake Safety

If the platform is located in an area prone to earthquakes, Cisco Systems strongly recommends that you use the earthquake brackets for mounting the device. The chassis requires 4 rack units (6.5 vertical inches) of rack space. You need to provide:

Complete the following steps to attach the provided brackets and handles, and to mount the chassis in the rack.

Attaching the Back Brackets to the Rack

Step 1   Determine which back brackets, long or short, fit in your rack by sliding the front bracket into a back bracket and measuring the assembly against your rack.

Step 2   Attach the appropriate back brackets (long or short according to Step 1) to the equipment rack, using your own bracket-mounting screws or clips.

Attaching the Front Brackets and Handles to the Chassis

Step 1   Remove the 12 pan-head screws from both sides of the chassis and the two bottom corner pan-head screws from the back of the chassis.

Step 2   On each side of the chassis, attach the front bracket with six provided black 10-32 flat-head screws.

Step 3   On the back of the chassis, fasten each bracket tab with one provided 6-32 pan-head screw.

Step 4   On each bracket, attach a handle and spacer with two provided 10-32 undercut flat-head screws.

Mounting the Chassis in the Rack

Step 1   While supporting the chassis, slide the front brackets into the installed back brackets.

Step 2   Fasten the front brackets to the rack with your screws or clips.

Step 3   Fasten the front and back brackets together using the 10 provided 4-40 pan-head screws.

Mounting in a Telco Rack

The chassis requires 4 rack units (6.5 vertical inches) of rack space. You need to provide:

Complete the following steps to attach the provided brackets and to mount the chassis in the rack.

Step 1   From each side of the chassis, remove the bottom center pan-head screw.

Figure 1-14: Remove Screws

Step 2   On each side of the chassis, attach the brackets using three provided black 10-32 flat-head screws.

Wall-Mounting the Chassis

To mount the chassis sideways and flat against a wall, you need to provide:

Complete the following steps to attach the provided brackets and to mount the chassis to the wall.

Attaching Brackets to the Chassis

Step 1   Remove the bottom three pan-head screws from each side of the chassis.

Installing the Chassis on the Board

Step 1   Place the chassis on top of the board and mark the four bracket screw locations on the board.

To determine the screw locations, see the following figure that shows the chassis sideways and flat against the wall at eye level.

Figure 1-19: Mark the Board

Step 2   To make inserting the screws easier, pre-drill the screw locations.

Step 3   If you have not already mounted the board flat against the wall:

Step 4   While supporting the chassis, fasten the chassis to the board using four provided wood screws, starting with the top bracket and then the bottom.

Adding or Replacing a Module

The chassis ships with the modules that you ordered pre-installed. If you want to add or remove a module, you can do so without disconnecting the device. Be sure to keep a cover plate over any empty slots to maintain proper air ventilation and minimize dust accumulation.

To remove and add a module, you need a Phillips screwdriver.

Warning Blank faceplates (filler panels) serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they contain electromagnetic interference (EMI) that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not operate the system unless all cards and faceplates are in place.

Warning An uncovered slot is a high energy hazard. Do not place your hand or any object other than a module into a slot. Contact with any interior part could lead to a dangerous shock of electricity.

Step 1   Wear an electrostatic discharge (ESD)-preventive wrist strap and attach it to ground, such as the metal rack.

Step 2   Loosen the captive thumbscrews on both ends of the module or cover plate you want to remove.

Step 3   Grasping only the handles on both ends of the module or cover plate, slide it out of its slot.

Figure 1-21: Removing a Module or Cover Plate

Step 4   Place the module in a rack, a grounded anti-static surface, or other safe place.

Step 5   To add a module to an empty slot, grasp only the handles of the module, and slide it along the guides into the slot.

Step 6   Securely tighten the thumbscrews with the screwdriver.

Connecting the Console Cable

To set initial parameters for the system and both modules, connect the provided console cable to the Console port of the module in the top slot, slot 0. While each module includes a Console port, only the port in slot 0 controls the entire system.
