Installing and Cabling the Chassis

This chapter describes how to install the Cisco VPN 5001 chassis, including information about:

Introduction

The Cisco VPN 5001 concentrator provides a network service provider (NSP) or enterprise customer with managed virtual private networks (VPNs) for one or more corporate sites.

See the Cisco VPN 5001 Software Configuration Guide for more information about using the VPN 5001 concentrator in your network.

Package Contents

Your package contains the following items:

Placement Considerations

To prepare to install the Cisco VPN 5001 chassis, consider the following:

Warning To prevent any VPN 5000 concentrator from overheating, do not operate it in an area that exceeds the maximum recommended ambient temperature of 104°F (40°C). To prevent airflow restriction, allow at least 6 inches (15.2 cm) of clearance around the ventilation openings.

Warning This unit is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area is where access can only be gained by service personnel through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.

Safety Guidelines

To ensure your safety and minimize potential damage to equipment, follow all safety guidelines before you attempt to move or work on the VPN 5001 chassis. The guidelines in this document do not encompass all potential hazards. Use good judgment and caution when working with this or any other electrical device.

Warning Disconnect all power cords and interface cables before you attempt to move or work on the VPN 5001 chassis. Even the interface cables can deliver dangerous doses of electricity.

Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.

Warning Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.

Warning Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all national laws and regulations.

Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.

Warning A voltage mismatch can cause equipment damage and may pose a fire hazard. If the voltage indicated on the label is different from the power outlet voltage, do not connect the chassis to that receptacle.

Warning Before working on a chassis or working near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units.

Rack-Mounting the Chassis

Only trained, authorized personnel can install the chassis in a rack. The chassis requires 1 rack unit (1.8 vertical inches, 4.572 cm) of rack space. You must provide:

Complete the following steps to attach the provided brackets to the chassis, and to mount the chassis in the rack.

Step 1   On each side of the chassis, attach the bracket using four provided screws.

Figure 1-1: Attaching Brackets to Chassis

Step 2   Attach the brackets to the rack using your screws as shown in Figure 1-2.

Figure 1-2: Attaching Brackets to Rack

Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.

Attaching the Power Cable

There are five styles of AC-input power supply power cords available, differing in plug type. Make sure that you have the correct style for your location (Figure 1-3 and Table 1-1.)

Plug the appropriate power cable into the 2-pin power connector on the chassis back. Use the power cord retainer to keep it securely in place. See the "Attaching the Power Cord Retainer" section.

Attaching the Power Cord Retainer

The power cord retainer keeps the power cord from being accidentally pulled out. You will need the following provided parts to attach the power cord retainer:

Step 1   Attach the retainer bracket to the chassis back with the provided screw.

Step 2   Loop the power cord so that there is enough cord to attach to the bracket (Figure 1-4).

Step 3   Use the tie-wrap to fasten the power cord to the retainer bracket.

Cabling the Ethernet Ports

Both Ethernet ports automatically sense whether the Ethernet network is 10BaseT or 100BaseT. Table 1-2 describes the protocol and cable support for the Ethernet ports:

Item Specification

Ethernet types

10BaseT or 100BaseT autosensing

Cable type

10BaseT: Category 3 or greater UTP
100BaseT: Category 5 or greater UTP

Maximum cable length

328 ft (100 m)

Connector

RJ-45 male. See Table 2-8 for cable pinouts.

The Figure 1-5 shows the two Ethernet ports. The following sections describe two cabling scenarios: using both Ethernet ports or only one Ethernet port.

Figure 1-5: Ethernet Ports

Cabling One Port Inside and One Port Outside the Firewall

If you use both Ethernet ports, Ethernet 1 is a VPN-only port. The VPN-only port only accepts secure VPN traffic from remote VPN clients, so you can place this port in front of the firewall and still maintain security. Connect Ethernet 0 to the network behind the firewall, as shown in Figure 1-6.

Figure 1-6: Dual Ethernet Installation

Cabling One Port Inside the Firewall

If you do not have a second Ethernet network in front of the firewall, connect Ethernet 0 to the network behind the firewall and leave Ethernet 1 unconnected, as shown in Figure 1-7.

Connecting the Console Cable

To set initial parameters for the system, connect the provided console cable to the AUX port. See the Cisco VPN 5001 Software Configuration Guide for information about using the AUX console port.
