The Cisco 10000 Edge Services Router (ESR) is a Layer 3 platform that enables service providers to provision IP services across thousands of leased-line connections.
The router aggregates large numbers of T3, T1, and DS0 leased lines through OC-12 and gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Its IOS software, based on IOS Release 12.0 S, offers a range of features that service providers can use to improve their network and customize their services.
The IOS release used on the Cisco 10000 ESR is optimized to meet the needs of service providers. This release supports a comprehensive set of standard features, including IP routing protocols, security services, and various commands to help you configure and administer the router. In addition, this release supports advanced features, including quality of service (QoS), Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MLP), and automatic protection switching (APS).
For more information about the services supported, refer to the Cisco 10000 ESR System Description. To find out how to configure features not documented in this book, refer to the online Cisco 10000 ESR Useful Links document.
The IOS software on the Cisco 10000 ESR allows you to operate and configure the following hardware components of the router:
