Configuring the Media Gateways for the Cisco SS7 Interconnect for Access Servers Solution

Configuring the Media Gateways for the Cisco SS7 Interconnect for Access Servers Solution

This chapter describes how to configure the Cisco Media Gateway (MGW) for the Cisco SS7 Interconnect for Access Servers Solution. The Cisco AS5200 and the Cisco AS5800 act as a network access server, or MGW, in an environment where SS7 and Q.931/IP is used to signal the establishment of bearer channels on time-division multiplexing (TDM) trunks connected to the MGW.

This chapter includes the following sections:

Overview of the Cisco AS5200

The Cisco AS5200 is a versatile data communications platform that provides the functions of an access server, a router, and digital modems in a modular chassis.

Note   Starting with Release 2.1 of Cisco SS7 Interconnect for Access Servers Solution, the Cisco AS5200 can no longer be ordered. Cisco supports the existing installation base only.

Note   This model is available with one Ethernet port and two serial ports. It is not recommended for use in a fault-tolerant or continuous-service configuration.

Configuring the Cisco AS5800 for the Cisco SS7 Interconnect for Access Servers Solution

This section describes how to configure the Cisco IOS on the Cisco AS5800 for the Cisco SS7 Interconnect for Access Servers Solution. The Cisco AS5800 acts as a network access server, or Cisco Media Gateway (MGW), in an environment where SS7 and Q.931/IP is used to signal the establishment of bearer channels on time-division multiplexing (TDM) trunks connected to the Cisco MGW.

Overview of the Cisco AS5800

The Cisco AS5800 is a high-density, ISDN and modem WAN aggregation system that provides both digital and analog call termination. The Cisco MGW components include a Cisco 5814 dial shelf and a Cisco 7206 router shelf. An optional AC power shelf is also available. Feature cards in the dial shelf communicate with the host router shelf over a dial-shelf interconnect cable. This nonblocking interconnect cable supports 100-Mbps, full-duplex data transfer.

Note   The Cisco 72xx family routers have the VIP card capability allowing for redundant configurations.

Interface Description

description pseudo D channel

In a signaling controller environment, this channel does not carry ISDN D channel signaling, but the configuration still requires a D channel definition so that the normal D channel is used. This channel is actually a bearer channel.

no ip address

Configuration of the ISDN D Channel.

Note   IP is configured only on the logical (dialer) interface.

encapsulation ppp

Enables PPP encapsulation.

Note   PPP encapsulation is configured on the physical and logical (dialer) interface.

no logging event link-status

Disables logging of link state changes (default).

dialer rotary-group 1

Creates interface dialer1 for digital dial-in users in bearer channels of PRIs signaled by this D channel.

isdn switch-type primary-ni

ISDN D channel signaling is type "ni", which is ISDN over IP from the signaling controller.

Note   This is required for SS7 regardless of the type of switch in your system.

isdn incoming-voice modem

Bearer channels containing analog dial-in users are to be connected to modems (or VFC for VoIP) to establish PPP sessions.

isdn rlm-group 0

RLM group; indicates that ISDN D channel will be from the signaling controller over IP address specified in the RLM group command below.

no cdp enable

Disables Cisco Discovery Protocol on interface.

If you have questions or need assistance, see the Cisco Connection Online in the Preface.
