Hardware Installation Instructions

This chapter provides instructions for installing system hardware into a rack and contains the following sections:

3.1 Installation Preview

Use the instructions in this chapter to install individual Cisco MGC components in a rack. For information on installing preracked systems, see "Installing a Preracked Configuration."

3.2 Required Hardware, Components, and Tools

Check that you have the following tools and understand how to prepare the rack for installing the equipment.

3.2.1 Tools Required

Make sure that you have the following standard tools before beginning the installation:

3.2.2 Hardware Component Spacing

The spacing between the Cisco MGC hardware components is important for several reasons. Cabling is provided for some configurations and will work only for certain vertical and horizontal orientations of the equipment. Vertical space is required above certain host computers to allow access to the circuit cards that are located inside the computer. See the following instructions and diagrams for details on where to locate and how to install the Cisco MGC hardware.

3.2.3 Definition of Vertical Rack Positions

Figure 3-1 defines the point of reference and terminology used in locating the equipment in the frame. The lowest position available for mounting in a frame is defined as position 0. The position numbers increase toward the top of the frame. The rack positions are defined in terms of vertical rack units. One rack unit equals 1.75 inches.

Figure 3-1: Vertical Rack Positions

3.2.4 Sun Netra t 1120/1125 Vertical Rack Locations

The Sun Netra t 1120 and Sun Netra t 1125 can be deployed in both single-host and dual-host configurations. In addition, there can be other hardware included, such as the ARU. The rack should be loaded from the lowest point to the highest point to maximize rack stability. Figure 3-2 shows the recommended vertical orientation of the Sun Netra t 1120 and Sun Netra t 1125 in a typical high-availability configuration with optional ARUs. Use this figure to locate the hardware for the particular configuration being deployed.

The Sun Netra t 1120 and Sun Netra t 1125 have been designed to mount in 19-inch, 23-inch, 24-inch, and 600 millimeter nominal frame openings. Cooling air is brought in from the front and is exhausted out the back of the units. A minimum of 31 square inches is required at the front for air intake and at the rear for air exhaust. If the equipment is placed in a frame with front and rear doors, the front doors must be ventilated to allow air intake, and the rear or top must be ventilated to allow air exhaust. Refer to the "Forced Air Cooling Requirements" section in the Sun Netra t 1120/1125 Installation and Basic Maintenance Guide for more information. This guide ships with the Sun Netra t 1120 and Sun Netra t 1125.

Figure 3-2: Sun Netra t 1120/1125 High-Availability Rack Configuration Rear View (Optional ARUs)

3.2.5 Sun E450 Vertical/Horizontal Rack Locations

The Sun E450 is deployed in both single and dual configurations. Figure 3-3 shows the recommended vertical and horizontal orientation of the Sun E450 for single and dualconfigurations. Use this diagram to locate the hardware for the particular configuration being deployed. The rack should be loaded from the lowest point to the highest point to maximize rack stability. A dual system with an A/B Switch requires two equipment frames. These two frames must be located side-by-side as closely as possible.

Note The Sun E450 can mount in any standard four-post 19-inch EIA rack with a minimum depth of 30 inches.

The Sun E450 requires adequate space for intake and exhaust to maintain proper cooling. Allow 92 square inches of unrestricted airflow into the front of the system and 97 square inches of unrestricted exhaust port at the rear of the system. Maintain a minimum of 1.5 inches clearance between the Sun E450 and any front or rear doors.

3.3 Installing Host Hardware

Use the instructions in this section to install the Cisco MGC hosts and components in a rack.

Note Cisco does not provide empty racks.

3.3.1 Sun Netra t 1120 and Sun Netra t 1125

Table 3-1 and Table 3-2 show the hardware needed in a standard system-based on the configuration option. See Figure 3-2 to determine where the hardware should be located in the equipment frame. A four-rack unit vertical space immediately above the unit is required to allow access to the circuit cards within.

Refer to the "Mechanical Considerations" section in the Sun Netra t 1120/1125 Installation and Basic Maintenance Guide for instructions on how to install the Sun Netra in the equipment frame. Secure the Sun Netra to the frame using four screws and toothed lock washers compatible with the chosen frame. The minimum screw size should not be less than 10-32 (M5).

3.3.2 Sun E450

The Sun E450s mount on equipment slides, which are provided. The Sun E450s weigh approximately 200 pounds. The equipment frame chosen must be capable of supporting the weight of the Sun E450s and any other equipment that might be in the frame. The frame should also be securely fastened to the floor to prevent the rack from tipping over when the Sun E450 are extended on their slides for servicing.

Table 3-3 shows the hardware you will need based on the configuration option. See Figure 3-3 to determine where the hardware should be located in the equipment frame. The blank spaces above the Sun E450s allow room to secure the serial async expansion box to the frame if that option is used.

Refer to the Ultra Enterprise 450 Server and Sun Ultra 450 Workstation Rackmounting Guide for instructions on how to install the equipment slides on the Sun E450 and how to install the unit in an equipment rack. This document ships with the Sun E450.

3.3.3 Serial Port Expander

The Serial Port Expander is a cable assembly consisting of a cable and a box with 8 ports. The purpose of the assembly is to increase the number of serial ports available. These ports are used to connect the A/B Switch and the ARU (when used) to the host computer. It is also the link for the heartbeat between the two host computers in a dual noncheckpointing system.

The Serial Port Expander does not have any built-in features to allow it to be attached to the frame or cabinet in which the other equipment is installed. Instead, the expander can rest on top of the host computer or other equipment, or, for a more secure installation, a secondary bracket can be used.

Figure 3-4 shows the Serial Port Expander attached to a bracket in the Sun Netra t 1120/1125, which is then attached to the frame or cabinet. Figure 3-5 shows the Serial Port Expander attached to a bracket in the Sun E450.

The Serial Port Expander is attached to the bracket with tie-wraps. The brackets should be attached to the frame or cabinet in the space above the host computer on both the Sun Netra t 1120/1125 and the Sun E450.
