Glossary
This chapter provides a brief list of terms used in this guide.
Access device
- The hardware component (the LS1010) used in conjunction with your virtual switch controller system. Also referred to as access server.
Access server
- The Cisco network access server for the virtual switch controller is the LS1010.
APC
- Adjacent point code. The point code of the next hop in the system for the bearer channels; usually it is the STP (signal transfer point).
API
- Application Programming Interface.
Applet
- Small program, often used in the context of a Java-based program, that is compiled and embedded in an HTML page.
ASN
- Auxiliary signaling network.
ATM
- Asynchronous transfer mode.
Build
- Create flat files that are ready for use by the VSC database.
Cage
- The piece of hardware into which cards are installed.
CCS
- Common channel signaling.
CES
- Circuit Emulation Services. A circuit type (called endpoints in SGCP).
C-ISUP
- Proprietary Cisco protocol based on ISUP.
Configuration tool
- Element management service tool that has a GUI.
CORBA
- Common Object Request Broker Architecture.
COT
- Continuity testing. COT is a requirement of the SS7 protocol specifications. It tests the bearer channels' status using either loopback or tone detection and generation.
CU
- Coding Unit. A type of access device. (See Access Device.)
DAS
- Dial Access Solution. Cisco's SS7 DAS product connects Cisco Access Servers to the SS7 network. Uses different configuration than the VSC solution.
Deploy
- Send flat files that are ready for use to the VSC data repository.
DPC
- Destination point code. This is part of the routing information for a signal.
GUI
- Graphical user interface.
HTML
- Hypertext Markup Language.
IE
- Information element.
ISUP
- Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) User Part. An upper-layer application supported by SS7 for connection set up and tear down.
JDBC
- Java Database Connectivity.
Linkset
- The set of signal channels for an SS7or C7 signal path purchased from a carrier. Each has a unique signaling link code.
NAS
- Network access server. A type of access device. (See Access Device.)
NEMS
- Network Element Management System.
Network
- The highest level of your VSC system. You have only one network, within which you create your sites.
Network Indicator
- The network indicator determines the type of call that is being placed: 0 = international, 1 = reserved, 2= national, and 3 = national spare.
ODBC
- Open Database Connectivity.
OPC
- Own point code. The point code of the Cisco VSC2700 virtual switch controller.
PBX
- Private branch exchange.
SGCP
- Simple Gateway Control Protocol. Used for controlling Voice over IP gateways by an external call control element (called a call-agent in SGCP).
Signal path
- Route of a signal channel that carries signaling data.
Site
- A group of closely related configuration data. It can be the name of a physical location or it can be a name you choose to give to one segment of your overall system.
SLC
- Signaling link code. Code that identifies a linkset.
SNMP
- Simple Network Management Protocol. It is used almost exclusively in TCP/IP networks and provides a means to monitor and control network devices and to manage configurations, statistics collection, performance, and security.
SS7
- Signaling System 7. A digital signaling system.
STP
- Signal transfer point.
SU
- Service unit (telephony) or signaling unit.
TAC
- A Cisco Technical Assistance Center. There are 4 TACs worldwide. See "Preface" for more information.
Tag
- Identification information, including a number plus other information.
Traffic path
- Route of a bearer channel that carries voice traffic.
TransPath component
- The part of your telephony controller system where signals are identified, converted, and routed.
VOATM
- Voice over asynchronous transfer mode.
