Cisco Fast Step software simplifies the setup and monitoring of Cisco routers. It runs on Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 personal computer systems. The application is provided with your router on the Cisco Fast Step CD-ROM. It is also available on Cisco Connection Online (CCO). Refer to the Release Notes for Cisco 800 Series Router for additional information regarding CCO.
This document contains the following sections:
To install the software, verify that your network service is installed and that the router is cabled and powered on. Insert the CD-ROM in the back of this guide into your CD-ROM drive. The Cisco Fast Step installation wizard starts automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions that guide you through router setup and test.
If you intend to use the RVS-COM Lite Common ISDN Application Programmers Interface (CAPI), install the CAPI software after you have used the Cisco Fast Step Setup to configure the router. You must have a network interface card (NIC) and TCP/IP installed in every PC connected to the router. If you have a terminal adapter and CAPI installed, you must uninstall the old version of CAPI, install the NIC, run Setup, and install RVS-COM Lite. The PC must have an IP address that is on the same subnet as the router, and you will need the IP address of the router LAN interface to set up the RVS-COM Lite software.
The information requested in this section is intended for a variety of Cisco 801, 802, 803, and 804 series router configurations. These entries might not be required for your setup, especially if you are using a configuration file supplied by your service provider. Your service provider or network administrator can provide you with the information you need to configure the router.
Obtain the following information from your ISDN service provider:

LAN addresses are either statically assigned or dynamically assigned. If you do not know which you are using, assume the LAN addresses are dynamically assigned, and skip this section. Otherwise, obtain the following LAN information from your network administrator:

If you are connecting to a remote corporate network (RCN), obtain the following information from your network administrator:
1. RCN telephone number 1 
2. RCN telephone number 2 (optional) 
3. Router user or Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) name

5. Router user (or PPP) name of the central device 
If you are connecting to an ISP, obtain the following information from your ISP:
1. ISP telephone number 1

To use Internet applications like Web browsers or e-mail, or to use TCP/IP to connect to Windows NT servers, obtain the following information from your RCN or ISP:
1. Primary DNS
2. Secondary DNS
3. WAN IP address
4. WAN subnet mask
5. Primary WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service)
6. Secondary WINS server
To connect to files and printers on NetWare, Windows NT, Windows 95, or Windows 98 computers running the Novell protocol, obtain the following information from your network administrator:
1. IPX WAN network number (RCN only)
2. IPX LAN network number
3. IPX LAN frame type (check one):

If you are using High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) protocol on a serial leased line, PPP authentication, or Frame Relay, obtain the following WAN information from your service provider:

If you have a serial leased line connection without the ppp authentication, you can skip this section. If PPP authentication is required by your service provider, all the three fields are mandatory.To use PPP authentication, obtain the following information from your service provider:
1. PPP username

To use Frame Relay, obtain the data-link connection identifier (DLCI) number from your service provider.

If the Cisco Fast Step setup wizard fails to launch when the CD is installed, follow these instructions:
Step 2 Double-click the CD icon.
Step 3 Double-click the Setup.exe icon.
Step 4 Follow the on-screen instructions that guide you through the router setup and test.
The Cisco Fast Step WinHelp system includes CD and Web buttons that display additional information on a selected topic in a Web browser window. The CD buttons work correctly if the Cisco Documentation CD is installed and started. Web buttons work correctly if you have an active connection to the Internet. For additional information, see "Using CD and Web Buttons" in the Cisco Fast Step online help file. The file is in your Cisco Fast Step directory on your PC. It is not necessary to run Cisco Fast Step software to view the WinHelp topics. To view the help, double-click any filename in the directory with a HLP extension.
