Monitoring

Monitoring

This chapter describes the Monitor Panel for a stack or a shelf in a stack, and the Monitor  Panel for a shelf in a System Controller:

The Monitor Panel provides real-time monitoring capabilities for Cisco Access Manager (CAM).


Note With the exception of the Overview screen, the Monitor Panel is available only for Access Server Shelves and stacks.

Monitoring for a Stack or a Shelf in a Stack

The Monitor Panel allows you to display utilization and current line usage information and statistics for a stack or a shelf in a stack in the following areas:

Overview

The Overview screen provides a graphical overview of the selected stack or shelf. For selected stacks, it displays the device bitmap, name, address, and current online status. For selected shelves, it displays the CPU utilization and channel usage.

To view the Overview screen:
Step Description

1 . 

Select the name of the stack or shelf.

The stack or shelf you want to display.

2 . 

Click Monitor.

The Task Selection bar displays all the monitoring functions CAM can perform for the device.

3 . 

Click Overview.

The Overview screen appears. (See Figure 6-1.)

Stack Display

The Overview screen provides the following information for a selected stack:
Parameter Description

Earliest poll time

Date and time of the earliest SNMP1 poll request to the stack.

Latest poll time

Date and time of the latest SNMP poll request to the stack.

Shelf number

Location of the shelf in the physical Cisco AccessPath system stack.

Device bitmap

Devices reachable by CAM display in gray. Devices that are unreachable by CAM display in red.

Status

  • Reachable---If the device has responded to the last SNMP poll request.

  • Unreachable---If the device did not respond to the last SNMP poll request.

Name

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

Type

Device type of the shelf, which can be one of the following:

  • Cisco AS5300 Access Server Shelf

  • Cisco 3640 Console Management Shelf

  • Cisco 7206 Router Shelf

  • Catalyst 5002 Switch Shelf

IP

Network management (SNMP) IP address for the shelf.

1SNMP = Simple Network Management Protocol.

Shelf Display

The Overview screen provides the following information for a selected shelf:
Parameter Description

Last poll time

Date and time of the last SNMP poll request. Click Poll  Now to get current polling information.

System up since

Date and time when the device was last rebooted.

Device bitmap

Devices reachable by CAM display in gray. Devices unreachable display in red.

Shelf Status

Shelf Name

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

Shelf Description

Brief description of the shelf entered during CAM configuration.

Device Type

Device type of the shelf (Cisco  AS5300, Cisco  3640, Cisco  7206, or Catalyst  5002).

SNMP IP Address

Network management (SNMP) IP address for the shelf.

Loopback IP Address

IP address of the loopback port.

IOS Version

Cisco IOS release running on the device. The Cisco IOS release is only displayed for devices that were configured by CAM. The release displayed is the one present at the time that the device was configured.

Active Analog channels

Cisco AS5300 only. The number of active analog channels currently in use on the device.

Active ISDN channels

Cisco AS5300 only. The number of active ISDN channels currently in use on the device.

1 Min Average CPU Load

1-minute moving average of the CPU busy percentage. Both a histogram of current and previous poll cycles and the current value are displayed.

5 Min Average CPU Load

5-minute moving average of the CPU busy percentage. Both a histogram of current and previous poll cycles and the current value are displayed.

Percent Utilization

Percentage of the available bandwidth in DS0 channels that is currently utilized by the active analog/ISDN traffic.1

1For example, if 6 out of the 24 available channels are currently utilized, the percentage of the bandwith utilized is 25%.

Shelf Status

The Shelf Status screen displays data on channel and modem status for the selected stack and its associated shelves. It provides two tables:

The tables also display the current status of the channels and modems with a legend describing the state as up or down, or that the poll is in progress.

To view stack or shelf status:
Step Description

1 . 

Select the name of the stack or shelf.

The stack or shelf for which you want to view statistics.

2 . 

Click Monitor.

The Task Selection bar displays all the monitoring functions CAM can perform for the device.

3 . 

Click Shelf Status.

The Shelf Status screen appears. (See Figure 6-2.)

The Shelf Status screen provides the following channel status information for a selected stack or shelf:
Parameter Description

Last poll time

Date and time of the last SNMP poll request. Click Poll  Now to get current polling information.

System up since

Date and time when the device was last rebooted.

Status

Shelf

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

#DS1

Number of DS1s that are available (operational status up).

#B/DS0

Number of DS0s (B channels) that are available for use.

#Active

Number of currently active analog/ISDN channels.

%Utilize

Percentage of channels that are currently in use.

#Analog

Number of active analog channels.

%Analog

Percentage of channels that are carrying analog traffic.

#ISDN

Number of currently active ISDN channels.

%ISDN

Percentage of channels that are carrying ISDN traffic.

The Shelf Status screen provides the following information for modem status for a selected stack or shelf:
Parameter Description

Status

  • Reachable (green circle)---If the device has responded to the last SNMP poll request.

  • Unreachable (red circle)---If the device did not respond to the last SNMP poll request.

  • Polling (yellow circle)---If polling is currently in progress.

Shelf

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

#Modems

Number of installed modems.

#Avail

Number of installed modems that are available for calls. A modem is available if it is in the on-hook state.

%Avail

Percentage of installed modems that are available for calls.

#Unavail

Number of modems installed that are unavailable for calls. A modem is unavailable if it is in one of the following states: in use, off, or dead.

%Unavail

Percentage of modems installed that are unavailable for calls. A modem is unavailable if it is in one of the following states: in use, off, or dead.

#In use

Number of modems that are currently in use. An in-use modem is a modem in one of the following states: connected, off hook, loopback, or download firmware.

%Use

Percentage of modems that are currently in use.

#Off

Number of modems that are currently held administratively offline.

%Off

Percentage of modems that are currently held administratively offline.

#Dead

Number of modems that are currently in the dead state. A dead modem is a modem with the state bad or download firmware failed.

%Dead

Percentage of modems that are currently in the dead state.

#Reject

Number of modem calls that have been rejected since the device was last booted. This is the total of ISDN and analog calls.

Modem Status

The Modem Status screen provides a view into the current utilization of the available modem pool, on a stack or shelf basis. The current status of each modem is presented in color with a legend describing each displayed modem state.

To view modem status:
Step Description

1 . 

Select the name of the stack or shelf.

The stack or shelf for which you want to view modem statistics.

2 . 

Click Monitor.

The Task Selection bar displays all the monitoring functions CAM can perform for the device.

3 . 

Click Modem Status.

The Modem Status screen appears. (See Figure 6-3.)

The Modem Status screen provides the following modem status information for a selected stack:
Parameter Description

Earliest poll time

Date and time of the earliest SNMP poll request to the stack.

Latest poll time

Date and time of the latest SNMP poll request to the stack.

Shelf

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

Modem icon display

Modem icon display

For each shelf in the stack, a list of modem icons displays that represents the state of each modem. The icons are coded by color:

  • Blue---Dormant

  • Purple---Testing

  • Red---Fail

  • Orange---Down

  • Green---Up

  • Gray---Unknown

Modem physical port mapping

The slot/port number under each icon represents the physical slot and port of the modem.

Channel Status

The Channel Status screen provides a graphical representation of the selected stack or shelf with icons illustrating the current status of each channel in color. A legend describes each displayed modem state.

If the channel is operational, an icon shows the function of the channel: modem, ISDN, or V.110/V.120.

To view channel statistics:
Step Description

1 . 

Select the name of the stack or shelf.

The stack or shelf for which you want to view channel statistics.

2 . 

Click Monitor.

The Task Selection bar displays all the monitoring functions CAM can perform for the device.

3 . 

Click Channel Status.

The Channel Status screen appears. (See Figure 6-4.)

The Channel Status screen provides the following information for a selected stack:
Parameter Description

Earliest poll time

Date and time of the earliest SNMP poll request to the stack.

Latest poll time

Date and time of the latest SNMP poll request to the stack.

Shelf

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

Channel icon display

For each shelf in the stack, a row of channel icons displays that represents the state of each channel of an active DS1 line. Both active and inactive DS1 lines are displayed. Inactive DS1  lines are displayed as a row of red circles. The icons are coded by shape and color.

The shapes are:

  • Square (with M)---Modem

  • Triangle---ISDN

  • Square (with V)---V110 or V120

The colors used for modem states are:

  • Blue---Not in use

  • Green---In use

  • Red---Out of service

The Channel Status screen provides the following information for a selected shelf:
Parameter Description

System up since

Date and time when the device was last rebooted.

Device Type

For each shelf in the stack, a row of channel icons displays that represents the state of each channel of an active DS1 line. Both active and inactive DS1 lines are displayed. Inactive DS1  lines are displayed as a row of red circles. The icons are coded by shape and color.

Channel mapping

DS0 channel number is displayed over each channel icon.

Line Statistics

The Line Statistics screen displays various line statistics for the DS1 line in the stack or shelf. This information includes the number of packets per second (PPS) and bits per second (BPS), and the number of analog and ISDN channels. The table also displays the current status of the lines with a legend describing the state as up or down, or that the poll is in progress.

To view the Line Statistics screen:
Step Description

1 . 

Select the name of the stack or shelf.

The stack or shelf for which you want to view line statistics.

2 . 

Click Monitor.

The Task Selection bar displays all the monitoring functions CAM can perform for the device.

3 . 

Click Line Statistics.

The Line Statistics screen appears. (See Figure 6-5.)

The Line Statistics screen provides the following information for the selected stack or shelf:
Parameter Description

Last poll time

Date and time of the last SNMP poll request. Click Poll  Now to get current polling information.

System up since

Date and time when the device was last rebooted.

Shelf

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

Status

Operational status of the DS1 line.

Slot index

Chassis slot containing the DS1 card.

Port index

Chassis port address of the DS1 card.

PPS

Current packets per second of this DS1 line.

BPS

Current bits per second of this DS1 line.

#Analog

Current number of analog calls on this DS1 line.

#ISDN

Current number of ISDN calls on this DS1 line.

Throughput

The Throughput screen displays aggregate throughput totals for the selected stack or shelf, including:

To view throughput statistics:
Step Description

1 . 

Select the name of the stack or shelf.

The stack or shelf for which you want to view throughput statistics.

2 . 

Click Monitor.

The Task Selection bar displays all the monitoring functions CAM can perform for the device.

3 . 

Click Throughput.

The Throughput screen appears. (See Figure 6-6.)

The Throughput screen provides the following information:
Parameter Description

Last poll time

Date and time of the last SNMP poll request. Click Poll  Now to get current polling information.

System up since

Date and time when the device was last rebooted.

% PPS utilized

Graphical representation of the PPS value as it relates to the total possible PPS for this stack or shelf.

% BPS utilized

Graphical representation of the BPS value as it relates to the total possible BPS for this stack or shelf.

Number of active DS1 lines

Number of DS1s that are operational.

Number of PPS

Current packets per second of this shelf or stack.

Number of BPS

Current bits per second of this shelf or stack.

Number of packet drops

Number of packets that were dropped on this stack or shelf between the current and previous polling intervals. The number of packet drops is the total of the following in the MIB II interface group for the DS1 interface: inErrors, outDiscards, and outErrors.

Monitoring for a Shelf in a System Controller

The Monitor Panel allows you to display utilization and current line usage information and statistics for a shelf in a System Controller in the following areas:

Caution For CAM's monitoring functions to support shelves in a System Controller, the System Controller must have a Network  Time  Protocol (NTP) server.

Overview

The Overview screen provides a graphical overview of the selected shelf. For selected shelves, the Overview screen displays the CPU utilization and channel usage.

To view the Overview screen:
Step Description

1 . 

Select the name of the shelf.

The shelf you want to display.

2 . 

Click Monitor.

The Task Selection bar displays all the monitoring functions CAM can perform for the device.

3 . 

Click Overview.

The Overview screen appears. (See Figure 6-7.)

Shelf Display

The Overview screen provides the following information for a selected shelf:
Parameter Description

Last poll time

Date and time of the last SNMP poll request. Click Poll  Now to get current polling information.

System up since

Date and time when the device was last rebooted.

Device Type

Device type of the shelf (Cisco  AS5800).

Device bitmap

Devices reachable by CAM display in gray. Devices unreachable display in red.

Shelf Status

Shelf Name

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

Shelf Description

Brief description of the shelf entered during CAM configuration.

SNMP IP Address

Network management (SNMP) IP address for the shelf.

Shelf

Case-sensitive, unique name for the shelf. The shelf name is the host name specified during CAM configuration.

Device Type

Device type of the shelf (Cisco  AS5800).

Modem icon display

For each slot in the shelf, a list of modem icons displays that represents the state of each modem. The icons are coded by color:

  • Gray---Unknown

  • Blue---Onhook

  • Green---Offhook, connected, or download

  • Orange---Busied out or disabled

  • Purple---Loopback

  • Red---Bad or download failed

  • X---No data available

Modem physical port mapping

The slot/port number under each icon represents the physical slot and port of the modem.

Channel Status

Line Statistics

The Line Statistics screen displays various line statistics for the DS1 line in the shelf. Current packets per second of this DS1 line.

BPS

Current bits per second of this DS1 line.

#Analog

Current number of analog calls on this DS1 line.

#ISDN

Current number of ISDN calls on this DS1 line.
