The Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server is equipped with a passive DC power filter, which contains a broadband electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter and circuitry for monitoring power coming into the Cisco 5814 dial shelf. The DC power filter is housed in the filter module, which resides in the dial shelf between the two power entry modules (PEMs).

This document explains how to remove and replace the filter module in the Cisco 5814 dial shelf chassis.

Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server Overview

The Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server is a high-density, ISDN and modem WAN aggregation system that provides both digital and analog call termination. It is intended to be used in service provider dial point-of-presence (POP), or centralized enterprise dial environments. The Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server chassis components include a Cisco 5814 dial shelf and a Cisco 7206 router shelf. An optional AC power shelf is also available.

The dial shelf and router shelf are bundled, and can be ordered to support either AC or DC power. Included in the dial shelf is a blower assembly, filter module, and power entry modules (PEMs). Also included in the bundled system are ingress trunk cards, modem cards, dial shelf controller cards, Flash memory PCMCIA cards, cables, and Cisco IOS software. The dial shelf feature cards and host router shelf communicate via a dial shelf interconnect cable.

The dial shelf contains 14 slots (numbered 0 through 13 on the backplane) and can support up to 10 modem cards, 2 trunk cards, and 2 dial shelf controller cards (in the near future). The router shelf supports the dial shelf and performs all routing and packet processing. The router shelf also houses the main system software images.

Figure 1 shows a front view of a fully configured Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server, and Figure 2 shows a rear view.

DC Power Filter Overview

The Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server is equipped with a passive DC power filter in the dial shelf, which contains a broadband electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter and circuitry for monitoring power coming into the dial shelf. The DC power filter is housed in the filter module, which resides in the dial shelf between the two power entry modules (PEMs).

The DC power filter supports the following functions:

The filter module first receives -48 VDC power from the PEMs via analog isolation circuits. The DC power passes through a broadband EMI filter in the filter module, then passes to a DC-to-DC converter on the dial shelf controller card, where it is converted and then routed back to the backplane for distribution to the dial shelf feature cards. A single filter module supports a fully configured dial shelf.
The filter module contains the environmental maintenance bus (MBus) module with a logic card, which carries monitor signals throughout the dial shelf by way of two, 10-pin molex MiniFit connectors.

The front and top of the filter module are perforated for minimum air flow restriction. There are no connectors accessible from the front; however, a DB-9 connector at the base of the filter module (visible only from below the dial shelf) connects a monitor cable to an optional AC-input power shelf.

You install the filter module in the Cisco 5814 dial shelf from the rear and plug it directly into the backplane. It is located below a removable rear cover, between the two PEMs, as shown in Figure 3.

The following guidelines are recommended when working with any equipment that is connected to telephone wiring or to other network cabling:

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damages equipment and impairs electrical circuitry. ESD occurs when printed circuit boards are improperly handled and results in complete or intermittent failures.

The system feature cards and dial shelf controller cards consist of a printed circuit board that is fixed in a metal carrier. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, connectors, and a handle are integral components of the carrier. Handle the system feature cards and dial shelf controller cards by their carrier edges and ejector levers only; never touch the printed circuit board components or connector pins.

Although the metal carrier helps to protect the printed circuit boards from ESD, wear a preventive antistatic strap whenever handling the dial shelf feature cards or dial shelf controller cards, or the router shelf network processing engine, I/O controller, or port adapters. Ensure that the strap makes good skin contact and connect the strap's clip to an unpainted chassis surface to safely channel unwanted ESD voltages to ground.

The following guidelines are recommended to prevent ESD damage:

Caution Periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. The measurement should be within the range of 1 and 10 megohms.

Removing and Replacing the Filter Module

This section explains how to remove and replace the filter module in the dial shelf chassis. This section also provides a list of tools and parts you need.

Warning Before completing any of the following steps, and to prevent short-circuit or shock hazards, ensure that power is removed from the DC or optional AC circuits. To ensure that all power is off, locate the circuit breakers on the panel boards that service the DC or AC circuits, switch the circuit breakers to the OFF (O) position, and tape the switch handles of the circuit breakers in the OFF (O) position.
Warning When installing the unit, the ground connection must always be made first and disconnected last.

Tools and Parts Required

You need the following parts and tools to remove and replace the filter module. If you need additional equipment, contact a service representative for ordering information.

Ensuring Easy System Access

If your Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server is installed in a standard 19-inch, 4-post or standard telco rack, cables from other equipment in the rack might obstruct access to the system rear. The rack power strips or other permanent fixtures might also cause obstruction.

Use the following guidelines to ensure easy system access when the system is installed in a rack:

Removing the Filter Module

This procedure is ideally performed during a scheduled maintenance time. If not, you must first power off the dial shelf as follows:

Step 1 Power OFF (O) the power switch located on each dial shelf PEM front panel. (See Figure 4.)

Step 2 If you are using the optional AC-input power shelf, power OFF (O) the power switches on the AC-input power shelf front panel. (See Figure 5.)

To remove the filter module from the dial shelf, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Attach an ESD-preventive wrist strap between you and an unpainted chassis surface.

Step 2 Ensure the PEM green power LEDs are both off.

Step 3 Using a 1/4-inch flat-blade screwdriver, loosen the captive screws on the filter module front panel.

Step 4 If you are using the optional AC-input power shelf, disconnect the monitor cable DB-9 connector from the base of the filter module, as shown in Figure 6.

Note 
Figure 6 shows the location of the DB-9 connector, which is at the base of the filter module. The safety cover normally covering the AC-input power shelf rear panel has been removed to show the DB-25 connector, which you use to connect the monitor cable from the filter module to the AC-input power shelf.
Caution The filter module weighs 5.5 lb (2.5 kg). Use two hands when removing or replacing the filter module.

Step 5 Grasp the filter module handle and gently pull the filter module about halfway out of the dial shelf chassis. (See Figure 7.)

Step 6 Holding the filter module handle with one hand, place your other hand under the module for support.

Step 7 Pull the filter module from the dial shelf chassis and place it in an antistatic bag to return to the factory.

This completes the filter module removal process. Proceed to the section "Replacing the Filter Module."

Replacing the Filter Module

To replace the filter module, complete the following steps. When you are finished, use a Site Log sheet to record service maintenance.

Step 1 Attach an ESD-preventive wrist strap between you and an unpainted chassis surface.

Step 2 Using tow hands to guide it, gently push the new filter module into the dial shelf chassis until it connects firmly with the backplane.

Caution When inserting the filter module, do not use unnecessary force as it can damage the connectors.

Step 3 Using a 1/4-inch flat-blade screwdriver, tighten the captive screws.

Step 4 If you are using the optional AC-input power shelf, connect the monitor cable DB-9 connector at the base of the filter module and tighten the jackscrews. Verify that the DB-25 connector at the other end of the cable is connected to the AC-input power shelf (see Figure 6). Power ON the AC-input power shelf.

Step 5 Power ON ( | ) the power switches located on each dial shelf PEM front panel.

Step 6 Note service maintenance on your Site Log sheet.

This completes the procedure for removing and replacing the filter module. If you have questions or need assistance, proceed to the section "Cisco Connection Online."
