Read Me First

This document contains information about your Cisco AS5400 universal access server. It provides an overview of procedures you should follow when setting up and installing your access server for the first time.

This document contains the following sections:

Your Cisco AS5400 universal access server includes the following components:

The basic procedure for setting up your system is as follows:

    1. Setup and install the Cisco AS5400 chassis.

    2. Connect the cables.

    3. Configure your software.


Note   The dial feature cards and carrier cards arrive installed as ordered from the factory.

Setting Up and Installing the Cisco AS5400 Chassis

This section describes the procedures for setting up and installing the Cisco AS5400 main chassis. The access server can be set up on a desktop or rack-mounted. The Cisco AS5400 contains an integral redundant AC or DC power supply. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the Cisco AS5400.

  • 19- and 24-inch rack-mount brackets

  • Four screws for installing the access server in a rack

  • Straight-through RJ-45-to-RJ-45 cable for an Ethernet connection

  • Ethernet hub or PC with a network interface card for Ethernet LAN connections

  • One breakout cable consisting of a 36-pin connector connected to eight RJ-45 adapters for CT1/CE1 connections

  • 75-ohm coaxial cable for a CT3 connection

  • PC running terminal emulation software for local administrative access

  • Modem for remote administrative access

  • A handcart, if you order more than 1 chassis

Site Setup Guidelines

Observe the following guidelines when setting up and preparing to install your Cisco AS5400:

Setup Procedure

Use the following procedure for setting up the Cisco AS5400:


Note   No assembly or disassembly of any component is required to unpack the chassis.


Step 1   Place the shipping container as near to the installation location as possible.

Step 2   Remove the chassis, accessories, and documentation from the shipping container.


Note   We recommend that you retain the shipping containers for future use.

Step 3   Verify you have received all components listed in Table 1.

Step 4   Install the chassis using the instructions in the Cisco AS5400 Universal Access Server Chassis Installation Guide (see the "Cisco AS5400 Documentation Roadmap" section).


Completing the Pre-Installation Checklist

To assist you with your installation and to provide a historical record of actions performed, use the installation checklist provided in Table 2. Make a copy of this checklist, and indicate when each procedure or verification is completed. When the checklist is completed, place it in your site log along with your other system records.

Configuring Your Cisco AS5400 Universal Access Server

To complete the procedures for setting up your system, you need to configure your software. The most current supported software version is already loaded on your system at the factory and can be found in the setup script in the System Configuration dialog. All cards are loaded on your system as ordered from the factory. Refer to the Cisco AS5400 Universal Access Server Card Installation Guide for troubleshooting and replacement information.

Configure the Cisco AS5400 universal access server software using the procedures described in the Cisco AS5400 Universal Access Server Software Configuration Guide.

Use the Cisco AS5400 Universal Access Server Software Configuration Guide to help you verify the software installation checklist provided in Table 3. Make a copy of this checklist, and indicate when each procedure or verification is completed. When the checklist is completed, place it in your site log along with your other system records.

Obtaining Documentation

World Wide Web

Documentation CD-ROM

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM is updated monthly. Therefore, it is probably more current than printed documentation. The CD-ROM package is available as a single unit or as an annual subscription.

Ordering Documentation

Registered CCO users can order the Documentation CD-ROM and other Cisco Product documentation through our online Subscription Services at http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/subcat/kaojump.cgi.
