This document describes the 4E1 data compression advanced interface module (AIM). The 4E1 data compression AIM provides hardware-based compression services for Cisco 3660 routers. The module provides for the compression and decompression of packet data transmitted and received on serial network interfaces. The 4E1 data compression AIM supports the industry standard Lempel-Ziv standard (LZS) and Microsoft/Point-to-Point Compression (MPPC) compression algorithms.

The 4E1 data compression AIM requires Cisco IOS Release 12.0(5)T or later.

Follow these guidelines when working on equipment powered by electricity:
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry. It occurs when electronic printed circuit cards are improperly handled and can result in complete or intermittent failures. Always follow ESD prevention procedures when removing and replacing cards. Ensure that the router chassis is electrically connected to earth ground. Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ensuring that it makes good skin contact. Connect the clip to an unpainted surface of the chassis frame to safely channel unwanted ESD voltages to ground. To properly guard against ESD damage and shocks, the wrist strap and cord must operate effectively. If no wrist strap is available, ground yourself by touching the metal part of the chassis.

You will need the following tools and parts to install a 4E1 data compression AIM on the router:
The 4E1 data compression AIM does not require an external network connection; it attaches directly to an internal AIM slot on the Cisco 3660 motherboard. (See Figure 1.)

The procedure for installing a 4E1 data compression AIM consists of:
1. Removing the motherboard tray
2. Installing the 4E1 data compression AIM
3. Replacing the motherboard tray
The sections that follow describe these procedures.
This section describes the procedure for removing the motherboard tray. You must remove the motherboard tray to access the internal components.

To remove the motherboard tray:
Step 1 Power OFF the router.
Step 2 Disconnect all cables from the motherboard panel.
Step 3 Loosen the captive mounting screw on the front of the motherboard tray. (See part 1 of Figure 2.)
Step 4 Rotate the tray levers to their open position (out and away from the motherboard tray). (See part 2 of Figure 2.)
Step 5 Pull the tray levels to slide the motherboard tray out of the chassis. (See part 3 of Figure 2).

To install a 4E1 data compression AIM in the internal AIM slot, do the following:
Step 1 Remove one of the metal screws that is holding down the motherboard. (See Figure 3 for the location of the screw.)

Step 2 Attach the metal standoff provided with the 4E1 data compression AIM in place of the screw removed in Step 1. (See Figure 4 for the location.)
Step 3 Attach the plastic standoff to the motherboard. (See Figure 4 for the location.)
Step 4 Insert the 4E1 data compression AIM into the AIM connector. Ensure that the plastic standoff fits into the hole on the 4E1 data compression AIM (See Figure 4.)
Step 5 Insert the metal screw removed in Step 1 through the 4E1 data compression AIM into the metal standoff attached in Step 2. (See Figure 5.)


To replace the motherboard tray in the chassis:
Step 1 Align the motherboard tray with the guides in the chassis and slide it gently into the slot. (See part 1 of Figure 6.)
Step 2 Push the motherboard tray into place until you feel its edge connector mate securely with the connector on the backplane. (See part 2 of Figure 6.)
Step 3 Rotate the tray levers in to their closed position so that the motherboard tray is secure. (See part 3 of Figure 6.)
Step 4 Fasten the motherboard tray's captive mounting screw into the hole on the chassis, using a Phillips screwdriver. (See part 4 of Figure 6.)
Step 5 Apply the AIM-COMPR4 label that comes with the 4E1 compression AIM onto the faceplate of the motherboard tray.
Step 6 Reinstall the chassis on the wall, rack, desktop, or table.
Step 7 Reconnect all cables.

The existing compression implementation for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) interfaces allows you to specify compression using the following interface configuration mode commands. Refer to the Cisco IOS configuration guides and command references for more information on these commands.
Use the following Frame Relay interface commands to configure compression for each individual Frame Relay port. Refer to the Cisco IOS configuration guides and command references for more information on these commands.
Use the following Frame Relay map commands to configure compression for each individual data-link connection. Refer to the Cisco IOS configuration guides and command references for more information on 4E1 data compression AIM commands.
The equipment described in this document generates and may radiate radio-frequency energy. If it is not installed in accordance with Cisco's installation instructions, it may cause interference with radio and television reception. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device in accordance with the specifications in part 15 of the FCC rules. These specifications are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference in a residential installation. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation.
You can determine whether your equipment is causing interference by turning it off. If the interference stops, it was probably caused by the Cisco equipment or one of its peripheral devices.
