This chapter contains a sample configuration for a Cisco Optical Networking System (ONS) 15304. It also describes three different sample configurations for the management plane network that supports remote management of the Cisco ONS 15304 using the SDH Regenerator Section Data Communication Channel (SDCC) bytes D1, D2, and D3. For most SDH applications, the typical management architecture involves using IP over CLNP tunnels (CTunnel) between the Element Management System (EMS) and each of the Cisco ONS 15304 network elements under its domain of control. In this architecture, a CLNS network layer is used both within the SDCC ring network and in the wide-area DCN. CLNS provides a common network layer infrastructure that extends from the management system sites to the SDH rings.
The EMS software includes a component referred to as Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay, which performs the tunneling feature within the EMS workstation platform. This software component provides the same functionality as the CTunnel in the Cisco ONS 15304, and is assumed for this example. The setup of the Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay software is not described here, but is similar conceptually. Please refer to the Cisco Transport Manager Installation Guide and the Cisco Transport Manager Operations Guide for a description of how to configure the Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay software.
With this application context, the following sample configurations illustrate the setup of the SDCC links and DCN connectivity for a typical Cisco ONS 15304 application, where:
The topology of the network configuration is shown in Figure 11-1. In the figure, TL1 traffic between Cisco Transport Manager and the NMA is applicable to SDH applications. Therefore, the protocol stack views given by TL1/TCP and TL1/X.25 are not applicable.

In contrast to the previous example where the IP over CLNS tunnels span between Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay and the Cisco ONS 15304, one of the Cisco ONS 15304s on the SDH ring is designated to receive and forward management traffic on behalf of all of the other Cisco ONS 15304s over the SDCC links. The IP over CLNP tunnels span two Cisco ONS 15304 devices attached to the same SDH ring. After the Cisco ONS 15304 management hub receives the management traffic, it routes traffic through the Ethernet LAN management port to a router providing access to the DCN network. The DCN network can be either TCP/IP based or X.25 based.
The configuration given here can be useful in certain central office LAN network applications. In this scenario, the central office has a separate management LAN that controls one or more network elements, including one or more Cisco ONS 15304s.
See Figure 11-2 for a diagram on how to set up the Cisco ONS 15304 as a management hub. In the figure, TL1 traffic between Cisco Transport Manager and the NMA is applicable to SDH applications. The protocol stack views given by TL1/TCP and TL1/X.25 are not applicable. The device names "Europa" and "Oberon" and the IP addresses in the figures are examples.

In this scenario, IP over CLNP tunnels (CTunnels) are established between a Cisco ONS 15304 serving as a management hub and all other Cisco ONS 15304s on the SDH ring. This scenario is similar to the previous example, except the management LAN interface intended for central office LAN connectivity is not used. Instead of using a LAN interface for extracting the management traffic, an E1 serial channel is used in its place to carry management traffic to the DCN network. Traffic received from the SDCC links is routed through the E1 serial channel, which is then sent through the TDM network until it reaches a router that is part of the DCN network.
This configuration requires the reservation of an in-band E1 2.048 Mbps channel. This channel is drop-terminated from a VC12 onto the Cisco ONS 15304 serving as a management hub. The E1 channel is then brought out of the SDH ring and terminated on a router within the DCN. Any Cisco ONS 15304 can be nominated to serve as the management hub, and it is up to the network designer to determine what configuration is most convenient.
