This appendix describes three configurations for the management plane network, which supports remote management of the Cisco ONS 15303 using the Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) regenerator section data communication channel (SDCC) bytes D1, D2, and D3. The following configurations are described:
For most SONET applications, the typical management architecture uses IP-over-CLNP tunnels (CTunnel) between the Element Management System (EMS) and each of the Cisco ONS 15303 network elements under its domain of control. In this architecture, a CLNS network layer is used both within the SDCC ring network and in the wide-area DCN. CLNS provides a common network layer infrastructure that extends from the management system sites to the SONET rings.
The EMS software includes a component called Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay, which performs the tunneling feature within the EMS workstation platform. Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay provides the same functionality as the CTunnel in the Cisco ONS 15303, and is assumed for this example. The setup of the Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay software is not described here, but is similar conceptually.
Using this application context, the following sample configurations illustrate the setup of the SDCC links and DCN connectivity for a typical Cisco ONS 15303 application, where:

In the following example, IP-over-CLNP tunnels (CTunnels) are established between a designated Cisco ONS 15303 (management hub) and all other Cisco ONS 15303 routers on the ring. In contrast to the previous example (in which the IP-over-CLNS tunnels span between Cisco Transport Manager/ConnectWay and the Cisco ONS 15303), one of the Cisco ONS 15303 routers on the SONET ring is designated to receive and forward management traffic on behalf of all of the other Cisco ONS 15303 routers, over the SDCC links. The CTunnels span two Cisco ONS 15303 devices attached to the same SONET ring. After the Cisco ONS 15303 management hub receives the management traffic, it routes traffic through the Ethernet LAN management port to a router providing access to the DCN network. The DCN network can be either TCP/IP based or X.25 based.
The configuration given here might be useful in certain central office LAN network applications. In this scenario, the central office has a separate management LAN that controls one or more network elements, including one or more Cisco ONS 15303 routers.
Figure A-2 illustrates how to set up the Cisco ONS 15303 as a management hub. The device names Europa, Oberon, Goblin, Angel, and the IP addresses are examples.

In this example, the DCN network is based on the X.25 protocol. If the DCN is based on a different protocol (such as TCP/IP), only the configuration of the DCN access routers needs to change. Configuration of the Cisco ONS 15303 does not depend on the DCN.

In this scenario, IP-over-CLNP tunnels (CTunnels) are established between a Cisco ONS 15303 serving as a management hub and all other Cisco ONS 15303 routers on the SONET ring. This scenario is similar to the previous example, except the management LAN interface intended for central office LAN connectivity is not used. Instead, an DS1 serial channel is used to carry management traffic to the DCN network. Traffic received from the SDCC links is routed through the DS1 serial channel, which is then sent through the TDM network, until it reaches a router that is part of the DCN network.
This configuration requires the reservation of an in-band DS1 2.048 Mbps channel. The channel is drop terminated from a VT1.5 onto the Cisco ONS 15303 that serves as a management hub. The DS1 channel is then brought out of the SONET ring and terminated on a router within the DCN. Any Cisco ONS 15303 can be nominated to serve as the management hub, and it is up to the network designer to determine the most convenient configuration.
Figure A-3 shows the topology of the network configuration. The example shows a management hub and a single Cisco ONS 15303 network element. Multiple network elements can be supported by instantiating multiple CTunnels. Configuration files of the following network devices are given below:
