User Registration Tool (URT) actively identifies users within the network and creates user registration policy bindings for policy registration, mobility, and tracking. URT solves many of the day-to-day mobility problems within a campus by ensuring that each user is appropriately associated with their authorized subnet/VLAN and that they all receive IP addresses that correspond to the logical groups to which they belong. URT offers dynamic links into Cisco`s real-time network management tracking software (CiscoWorks2000 CWSI Campus) for quick pinpointing of users` locations. These network management links significantly reduce the time it takes to resolve problems within both the help desk and the network operations groups. URT is essential for companies that have highly dynamic, constantly changing work environments, and require control over changes with respect to their logical workgroup associations. URT links to the network login process for dynamic registration of the user to the policy server and for control of user access to logical subnets and virtual LANs (VLANs). The user registration policy bindings include login names, IP subnets, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) addresses, Media Access Control (MAC) addresses, and user locations. URT uses user login information to intelligently monitors who the users are, the switch ports from which they are connecting, and the time of day they are accessing the network. After users are identified within the policy server, User Tracking reconfigures the switch ports on which they reside to the appropriate subnets, notifies the policy server of these changes for tracking and auditing purposes, and reconfigures the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) address of the workstation for IP address consistency. Further, URT provides active links between the user login process, DHCP addressing, and the switch port in which a user resides, and proactively communicates this information to the network management server for tracking and diagnosing problems within the network. Dynamic Links to DHCP allow users to be tracked by their network addresses and physical network locations, significantly reducing the time needed to resolve problems. URT fully automates switch port configuration changes for users logging into the network, significantly reducing the administration costs typically associated with campus mobility. URT provides links into CiscoWorks2000 Campus`s User Tracking application for quick identification of user locations by their login names. URT`s registration process can be integrated with Microsoft`s NT Primary Domain Control Server (PDCS) to consolidate the administration required to set up accounts and leverages the growing adoption of PDCS within the market. URT provides integration with Novell`s NDS to allows URT to map VLAN assignments to either users or organizational units. URT offers a fully redundant architecture, which is essential for ensuring continuous 24 x 7 successful login and switch port reconfiguration. URT is NT-based and can be loaded on any higher-end Pentium/PC platform, thereby reducing the total cost of ownership and providing consistent operating system support with CWSI Campus, Microsoft`s PDCS, Novell`s NDS, and Windows NT and Windows 95 client systems.
