The Cisco uBR7246 Universal Broadband Router is two products in one chassis: a DOCSIS-qualified Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) and a carrier-class router based on the Cisco 7200 platform. The Cisco Universal Broadband Router uBR7246 combines the functionality of the industry leading Cisco 7200 router and a head-end cable modem in one integrated platform. The uBR7246 provides cable operators with a cost-effective, scalable, and feature-rich interface between subscriber cable modems and the backbone data network. The modular architecture of the uBR7246 maximizes cable operators` investment by enabling them to support multiple network services in one platform and avoid head-end product obsolescence as subscriber modem products and technologies evolve. Cable operators have the ability to deploy a variety of services to customers, including internet access and multimedia applications, while maximizing the efficiency of their network bandwidth utilization, which in turn allows cable operators to derive higher profits from the same scarce network resources. The Cisco uBR Broadband cable subsystem consists of up to 4 modem cards which plug in to the Universal chassis. Each modem card is entirely independent from a radio frequency (RF) standpoint, while all modem cards in the chassis share the Router subsystem. This provides maximum cost-effectiveness and flexibility to the cable operator by amortizing the cost of the routing across all the modems in each chassis, while allowing each of four modem cards to serve a dedicated group of subscriber modems. This flexibility further enables the use of different types of subscriber devices if desired. Cisco offers a wide variety of modem cards, depending on the types of subscriber modems that are needed. The modem cards Cisco offers are all fully compliant with the MCNS DOCSIS 1.0 specification. MC11C: 1 Downstream and 1 Upstream The MC11C Modem Card contains one 64-QAM/256-QAM downstream modulator and one QPSK/16-QAM upstream demodulator on a single card. The MC11C modem card supports both two-way and telephone-return modems simultaneously. The MC11C offers cable operators the lowest capital cost for an initial entry point into a market, and is therefore ideal for smaller cable systems or nodal areas with low penetration of cable data service MC12C: 1 Downstream and 2 Upstream The MC12C Modem Card contains one 64-QAM/256-QAM downstream modulator and two QPSK/16-QAM upstream demodulators on a single card. The MC12C modem card supports both two-way and telephone-return modems simultaneously. The MC12C offers cable operators a low capital cost for initial market entry, and is well suited for deployment in small cable systems that want to divide subscribers onto separate upstream channels MC14C: 1 Downstream and 4 Upstream The MC14C Modem Card contains one 64-QAM/256-QAM downstream modulator and four QPSK/16-QAM upstream demodulators on a single card. The MC14C modem card supports both two-way and telephone-return modems simultaneously. The MC14C provides a very favorable overall cost per subscriber modem, growth potential as subscriber density grows, and is well suited for deployment in medium to large cable systems with good penetration of cable data service MC16C: 1 Downstream and 6 Upstream The MC16C Modem Card contains one 64-QAM/256-QAM downstream modulator and six QPSK/16-QAM upstream demodulators on a single card. The MC16C modem card supports both two-way and telephone-return modems simultaneously. The MC16C provides a very favorable overall cost per subscriber modem, and is well suited for deployment in medium to large cable systems with good penetration of cable data service. MC16S: 1 Downstream and 6 Upstream Spectrum Management Card The MC16S Modem Card contains one 64-QAM/256-QAM downstream modulator and six QPSK/16-QAM upstream demodulators on a single card. Incorporating a "piggy-back" spectrum management card resident on the MC16S motherboard, the MC16S to effectively allocates bandwidth for upstream channels in an HFC network. Delivering transparent upstream ingress noise avoidance, the MC16S improves cable plant reliability and offers an ideal noise management solution for extremely dense or quality-critical data, voice and video service deployments. The Router subsystem of the Cisco uBR7246 is built on the Cisco 7200 platform. The Cisco 7200 provides high-performance, density, and availability with industry-leading serviceability and manageability features. Cable operators can now gain the advantages of high-performance network- layer switching and services, including security, quality of service, and traffic management. The Cisco uBR7246 series delivers the full suite of Cisco IOS software services, which are capable of managing access to network resources, allocating quality of service among applications, and providing value-added functions such as NetFlow switching The Cisco uBR7246 sets new standards in price/performance, meeting requirements for high-throughput at an affordable price. With a 150 MHz or 200 MHz RISC processor and SRAM, the Cisco uBR7246 provides over 600 Mbps of bandwidth capacity and switching performance at 100,000 packets per second (pps). NetFlow switching, Cisco IOS switching mechanism, allows the Cisco uBR7246 to combine high- performance network-layer switching with the connection-oriented-application of network services, such as security, quality of service, and traffic management. It also enables detailed traffic statistics by protocol and IP address. The Cisco uBR7246 uses many of the same port adapters as the Cisco 7200 series and the 7500-Versatile Interface Processor (VIP), thus protecting customer investment in interfaces and simplifying sparing. Provides integrated routing technology to the cable operator with several critical advantages including true network privacy, more efficient use of scarce network bandwidth, and centralized network intelligence and control. By incorporating routing into its headend modem package, the Cisco uBR7246 eliminates the need for a separate co-located router, thereby reducing space requirements and capital investment. Allows multiple modem cards with various densities of upstream and downstream modems per card to maximize operator flexibility in matching system cost to capacity requirements. Modem cards are accepted in any slot, promoting interoperability and simplifying hardware configuration. As technology changes and markets evolve, Cisco will continue to develop new standards-based modem cards in response to customer needs. Assures interoperability across a wide range of cable modem and set top box products through DOCSIS compliance. Cisco is working with a large number of high-volume consumer electronics manufacturers with proven brand names to ensure the wide-scale availability of low-cost, interoperable cable modems. Supports both two-way and telephone-return MCNS modems on the same card, which enables deployment of both two-way telephone return in the same channel and reduces hardware cost. Delivers the proven stability of the industry`s leading software platform, Cisco IOS software and simplifies operations by providing a common platform and user interface across all networking equipment. Accepts most standard Cisco 7200 port adapters, network processing engines, and I/O controllers, providing multiple network interfaces and simplifying sparing. Provides dual power supplies with current sharing so that automatic cutover occurs in case of failure. Supports online insertion and removal of components, which allows seamless upgrades of port adapters, modem cards, and power supplies without rebooting or taking the system off line. Contains four modem card slots, which maximizes network capacity per chassis while minimizing both rack space utilization and overall cost of deployment. Accepts any modem card in any slot, which supports a wide variety of subscriber units, promotes interoperability, and simplifies hardware configuration. Supports both two-way and telephone-return MCNS modems on the same card, which enables deployment of both two-way telephone return in the same channel and reduces hardware cost. Utilizes common Port Adapters with Cisco 7200 and 7500 VIPs, which simplifies sparing and protects customer investment in interfaces. Has a Fast Ethernet Port integrated in the I/O Controller, reducing the price per fast ethernet port. Supports online Insertion and Removal of port adapters, which allows seamless upgrades to higher density and new port adapters without rebooting or taking the system off line. Provides system flash memory which enables fast, reliable software and microcode upgrades and allows a single, centralized point of administration, obviating the need to visit each router site when upgrading software or microcode Specifications Cisco uBR7246 Router Subsystem Technical.
