Product Overview

Cisco offers a complete family of dedicated, enhanced LAN, WAN, and ATM Remote Monitoring (RMON) probes for comprehensive, end-to-end, seven-layer monitoring of an enterprise network. The SwitchProbe devices provide network and application managers with a common set of measurements--from volume to response time--that correlate with actual application flows enterprise-wide. As a result, these managers can directly apply the use of, and investment in, network resources to meeting business goals.

A typical enterprise network can be equipped with multiple SwitchProbes with one probe connected to each critical link or to a switch`s diagnostic port. SwitchProbes are managed and controlled from a centrally located network management console.

SwitchProbe network monitoring probes offer the following features and benefits:

• Support for all nine Ethernet RMON groups and ten Token Ring RMON groups as defined in RFCs 1757 and 1513

• RMON2 for 7-layer concurrent monitoring of multiple network parameters

• Support for monitoring of half- and full-duplex Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet links

• In-band/out-of-band configuration support via BOOTP and TFTP

• Support for duplicate IP address detection

• Automatic logging of statistical data for trend analysis and reporting

• ATM RMON MIB support, permitting the collection of native ATM statistics for a specific collection of ports

• Flash Memory for easy software upgrades

• Compatibility with any SNMP-based network management system

• VLAN monitor (optional), providing advance monitoring capabilities for any ISL VLAN trunk link

• Resource monitor (optional), providing proxy SNMP and remote polling

• Netflow monitor (optional), providing RMON and RMON2 functionality for distributed monitoring of Cisco NetFlow-enabled routers and Catalyst switches with the NetFlow Feature Card

• Application Response Time monitor (optional), extending the RMON2 standards to measure delays between request/response sequences in application flows for popular applications such as HTTP and FTP

• Fast EtherChannel monitor (optional), enabling the aggregation of data from two full-duplex, Fast Ethernet links to provide a consolidated view of all traffic passing between the Catalyst switches

SwitchProbes can be easily installed by simply typing in the IP address and connecting the probe to the network. Once connected, SwitchProbes immediately begin collecting RMON statistics. At power on, the SwitchProbe automatically collects default statistics for EtherStats, host, history and matrix groups. The SLIP interface can be used to dial in or out from a remote probe.

SwitchProbes can be easily managed from a remote site through in-band or out-of-band links. BOOTP support allows any probe to be automatically assigned an IP address and name. TFTP allows any probe to be updated with the most current release of software. NSLogin allows an administrator to change the probe`s configuration files from a central site.

SwitchProbe devices are components of Cisco`s comprehensive network monitoring solution that also includes the embedded RMON agents in Cisco devices, the Network Analysis Module, and TrafficDirector, the traffic monitoring application available as part of the CiscoWorks 2000 family. These tools offer end-to-end and multi-layer information on network traffic, and can be used for fault isolation and trouble-shooting, proactive management and capacity planning, and application performance management.
