Cisco Network Registrar (CNR) is a full-featured DNS/DHCP system that provides scalable naming and addressing services for enterprise and service provider networks. Cisco Network Registrar dramatically improves the reliability of naming and addressing services for enterprise networks and will be integrated in to the CiscoAssure Policy Networking system to provide policies based on users. For cable ISPs, Cisco Network Registrar provides scalable DNS and DHCP services and forms the basis of a DOCSIS cable modem provisioning system. Cisco Network Registrar includes a standards compliant DNS server that offers the most advanced feature set in the industry including support for incremental zone transfers, dynamic updates and notify. The Cisco Network Registrar DHCP server supports DHCP Safe Failover (redundant DHCP servers), dynamic DNS updates, DOCSIS cable modems and integration with directory services using LDAPv3 Cisco Network Registrar includes a wide range of unique and standard features that provide customers with numerous benefits over competing products and public domain software. The most critical benefits are stabilizing the IP infrastructure, automating network services, and preparing for policy networking. Below is a list of the key features built into Cisco Network Registrar: Scalable, multithreaded DNS server with support for dynamic DNS, incremental zone transfers, and notify Full-featured DHCP server with support for BOOTP, dynamic BOOTP, multihoming, client-class, and secondary address on routers Redundant DHCP services using the DHCP Safe Failover Protocol, which eliminates DHCP as a single point of failure while avoiding the problem of duplicate address assignment found in earlier failover protocols Support for Windows 2000. Cisco Network Registrar has been fully qualified to run on a Windows 2000 platform and includes all of the features necessary to support Windows 2000 clients and servers Directory services integration using LDAP V.3 Support for DOCSIS cable modems Customized DHCP client configuration based on media access code (MAC) address, device type, or other criteria, "Customization" includes address assignment from different pools of addresses, customization of all DHCP options sent to the client, and customization of the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) used to update DNS Extension points a special form of application programming interface (API) that provides callouts to user-written logic for even greater customization of DHCP processing of individual client requests.
