Cisco MGX 8240 Series — Private Line Gateway

Product Overview

The Cisco MGX 8240 series private line gateway (formally known as Sentient U1600) is a powerful and cost effective ATM Circuit Emulation platform that allows service providers to transport leased-line channelized DS3, DS1 and NxDSO circuits over an ATM backbone. The MGX 8240 is a leading edge high-density product capable of supporting up to 1260 channelized DS1s in a fully configured single shelf, allowing traffic to be carried across OC-3c ATM trunks.

The MGX 8240 provides an excellent platform for migrating TDM networks to packet-oriented ATM networks. Service providers who recognize the need to transition their infrastructure to next-generation packet-based networks can deploy the private line gateway today, while continuing to offer traditional high revenue circuit-based TDM services. Service providers can immediately offer and aggressively grow their packet-based voice, video and data services without changing their core switching technology.

The ATM standards-compliant MGX 8240 interoperates with existing ATM-based infrastructures via a UNI 3.0 interface.

Key Features and Benefits

• Each processor service module (PSM) supports up to 2016 circuits

• The access interface provided on the PSM I/O card is a physical DS3 interface which can be channelized to the DS0 level

• Circuits can be a combination of a single DS0, NxDS-0 or clear channel DS1s with DSOs (672)

• Both extended super frame (ESF) as well as super frame (D4) DS-1 framing is supported

• T1 payload loop-backs are supported per ANSI T-1.403-1996

• The MGX 8240 minimizes the cost and time for provisioning DS1 or fractional DS1 private lines. The operational cost is dramatically lower than that of a traditional TDM/DCS solution

• Provides efficient transport and interconnection between a TDM infrastructure and new world networks

• Allows the inter-machine trunk TDM traffic between class 4/5 switches to be migrated over an ATM network.

• Network operators can perform necessary test and diagnostic functions from a remote location and can also provision circuits across an ATM network by interfacing directly with the ATM switch-provisioning server.

• Redundancy

  The MGX 8240 offers 1:N processor card redundancy for each PSM. N can be as great as 4.

  APS 1+1 protection is provided for each OC3 interface

  The IMC cards are half-size cards and two can be inserted in slot one to provide full management connectivity redundancy

The MGX 8240 is based on a multi-slot chassis platform and supports up to fifteen CES processor service modules (PSMs). Each module is accessible from the front of the chassis and has an associated back interface I/O module. Each pairing of a PSM with an I/O module and other system level common elements forms an independent logical CES module.

The MGX 8240 chassis is designed as an integrated unit containing:

• Individual face plates on each CES PSM for airflow and electro-magnetic interference (EMI) sealing as well as alarm and connector identification

• Optional cable management system

• Designed to be mounted in a 23-in. rack rack with two chassis fitting into a single seven foot rack.

  A cable management system is provided with the MGX 8240 to elegantly route all the access, trunk and Ethernet cables. It is removable for those customers who wish to use other commercially available systems.
